Label/Format: Island – first pink rim Pye with the rough textured surfaces and deep inner ring and matt finish. Only a small select few of the very early pink rim pressings had this format. They have a totally different look and feel to the standard pink rims, and the records were massively pressed exactly as per the very first pink Issues from 1968. These particular Pye pressings are becoming very collectable and sort-after simply due to the fact so few were made on this particular run.

Label Conditions: Two super examples that have barely aged at all. Very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks very fine, few and faint. A tiny mark on side two probably in manufacture, little else. An amazing heavyweight pressing with sound to match.

Cat Number: ILPS 9085.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 156 grams. Way above average for a pink rim pressing, but as stated, this is no ordinary pink rim copy. Pye pressings with their unique block matrixes and textured labels were highly distinctive. Indeed this pressing takes you right back to the format (bar the design) of the 1968 issue.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: This heavyweight Pye pressing from around 1970 is quite rare with only limited runs made. Pye pressings at their very best were simply superb – and this copy offers beautiful, clean and very dynamic sound. These are not seen or offered often with only limited made for this, and a few other Island records at this time.

Musicians: Ian Anderson - flute, mouth organ, claghorn, piano and vocals; Mick Abrahams - guitar, nine string guitar and vocal; Clive Bunker - drums, hooter and charm bracelet; Glenn Cornick - bass guitar.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Jethro Tull’s debut masterpiece and many agree it was never bettered, it even charted at 10 in the UK. A rock classic of high repute, a debut of incredible maturity that fitted in nicely between blues and prog. Mick Abrahams was the darling of the clubs, and for a brief moment offered a challenge to Clapton, especially with his showpiece ‘Cat’s Squirrel’. Shortly afterwards he left the band to form Blodwyn Pig. Anderson became the undisputed leader and live he and the band were tremendous. On record they rarely got much better, ‘Dharma for One’ that opens side two has probably the best ever (short) drum solo ever - this just has to be heard on stereo vinyl that images brilliantly - breathtaking sound, as is the whole album and a truly super example to view and enjoy with one of the greatest Island covers in equally impressive condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format with front and back laminate. This covers all the closed edges and ends tucked inside the gatefold seams. The inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by E. J. Day and includes the typical Pye style heavy-duty polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Stunning artwork seen to nigh-on maximum advantage under shiny, fresh and clear laminate that has no lifting and minimal traces of dulling, even under angled light. That far more unusual with such a heavy, thick record inside all these years. Any of the very few laminate creases fine and faint, viewed normally full-on, hardly any even show. Same for any surface marks, any present fine and light as well. The odd small chip the exposed laminate strip ends, but little detracts from what is a still a very impressive heavyweight cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Light rubbing on the top and bottom edges which always seems to occur on this dark inside area, here only relatively minor. Little else to fault, this is still strongly coloured and attractive.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four show barely any hint of wear and are still very straight and flush with full laminate cover that has not scuffed, still silky smooth to the fingertip. Four very impressive edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp to very sharp with minimal traces of wear again, both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Any thickening or burring light near the bottom as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: This one has the thinner spine in the style of the standard Sgt Pepper covers. Due to the raised hinge inside, this always means a natural central ridge will occur. In most cases that means laminate can peel and the text sink into the ridge, few seem to avoid it as most Pepper owners will know. So this is a still a very fine spine with only mild peeling to the ends and a moderate ridge. All text fully present and unworn under the still solid laminate, any sinkage only light as seen in close-up and all still easily readable. Still straight and very solid, any compression mild, also folded very square, so the edges all meet up very closely and parallel. Just a little rubbing to the very top and a couple of gentle toning spots that show very little.

Corners: As stated above, the top corner has rubbed a little, but all others show very little at all and excellent or better shape is largely retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very impressive example of this famous old cover, not quite as old as the band look on the front but this is now around 45-years-old old, but gives few clues to the fact. This should please most collectors and will prove difficult to find a great deal better with the E. J. Day imprint. The earliest examples were indeed uncredited. The front graphic, one of rock’s true classics, this prime example could even prove a significant upgrade for many.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white inner is in fine condition as well. A typical Pye heavy-duty polylined inner that is correct for this particular pressing. Some corner creasing and crinkle and gently aged by seam adhesive darkening, all the edges unsplit with no repairs. Both window circles crisp and the lining very clear and still incredibly fresh. This is UK patented and Foreign Patents Pending text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and heavily pressed as these unique Pink Rim Island Pye contract albums were. A fine, unfeelable mark on the start of side two has NO sound at all. any other surface marks as seen under bright angled light the same. A splendid record and this plays superbly with all the detail and sonic delivery you would expect from an first pressing – except this one has not been ruined by basic heavy-tracking records players of the 1960s.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic debut album plays even above it’s visual grading to the maximum with hardly anything to fault. As stated already, Pye pressings at their best are fantastic, but they could prove variable and nothing can ever be taken for granted. This one as superb clean stereo sound that has a powerful mix and images beautifully. Check out that incredible short drum solo on ‘Dharma For One’. This plays with clean and dynamic sound and devoid of the dreaded distortions so many of the early copies have now inherited. The innermost songs with that delicate, difficult flute sections always are a concern for any copy played too many times on heavy-tracking equipment – no worries here, the sound is sharp with effortless tracking and clarity. It should now remain so for many years when played on a modern lightweight turntable. This is not an easy album and so often it disappoints even on clean visual copies. This plays with hardly anything unwanted and was a real joy. The final short song, the delicate ‘Round’ plays very well too, I have heard this sound horrible on some copies with major pressing noise and distortions, again this has hardly any issues at all. This merits strong recommendation for those wanting to experience what is practically a 1968 copy without the major expense of the label. The 1968 first issues were Pye pressed, thereafter these were contracted out to others, but the Pyes are always extra special.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
