Rarity: This album was pressed on a variety, and just about all the early Island variant labels. This one of the lesser-seen pressings and only available for the briefest time before the new pink rim format appeared. Copies so little used with neat, attractive covers are even harder to find.

Musicians: Ian Anderson – flute, mouth organ, claghorn, piano and vocals; Mick Abrahams – guitar, nine string guitar and vocal; Clive Bunker – drums, hooter and charm bracelet; Glenn Cornick – bass guitar.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Jethro Tull’s debut classic and many agree it was never bettered, it even charted at 10 in the UK. A debut of incredible maturity that fitted in nicely between blues, rock and prog. Mick Abrahams was the darling of the clubs, and for a brief moment offered a challenge to Clapton, especially with his showpiece ‘Cat’s Squirrel’. Shortly afterwards he left the band to form Blodwyn Pig. Anderson became the undisputed leader and live he and the band were tremendous. On record they rarely got much better, ‘Dharma for One’ that opens side two has probably the best ever (short) drum solo ever – this just has to be heard on stereo vinyl that images brilliantly – breathtaking sound, as is the whole album and a truly super example to view and enjoy with one of the greatest Island covers in equally impressive condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format with front and back laminate. The inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by E. J. Day and includes the typical Pye style heavy-duty polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Beautiful artwork seen to near maximum advantage under shiny, fresh and clear laminate that has minimal lifting and hardly any dulling, even under light. That far more unusual with such a heavy, thick record inside all these years. Any laminate creases fine and light, and mostly near the edges that few will escape totally. Avoiding surface marks and the exposed laminate strip ends are impressively clean and unrubbed. Both sides are impressive as seen in the pictures.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside either, any blemishes are few, gentle and light.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four show little hint of wear, except a rub on the bottom back right corner tip, all remain straight and flat with full laminate cover. Four very impressive edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp to very sharp with minimal traces of wear again, both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Any thickening or burring only light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: This one has the thinner spine in the style of a standard Sgt Pepper cover. Due to the raised hinge inside, this always means a natural central ridge will occur. In most cases that means laminate peel and the text sink into the ridge, few seem to avoid it as most Pepper owners will know. This one has shed its laminate, but the surface has little wear with the text present with minimal hint of rubbing as seen. Still straight and solid with light compression in places, also folded quite square, so the edges all meet up closely and near parallel.

Corners: As stated above, the bottom right back corner tip has at least a moderate rub. The others have little and retain very fine shape with no dinks of any note.

Cover Summary: The one corner rub apart, this is a super example of this vintage classic cover. Remaining fresh and attractive, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white inner in superb condition. A typical Pye quite heavy-duty polylined inner that is correct for this particular pressing. Both window circles immaculate and the lining very clear and still incredibly fresh. The lack of paper darkening or significant creasing are unusual pluses, all the edges unsplit with no repairs. This is UK patented and Foreign Patents Pending text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and arguably critically graded. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and heavily pressed as these unique early Pink i Island Pye contract albums were. A few small, mostly light surface marks seen under bright light, but these superficial, non-penetrating and non-sounding. A thick, deep-grooved record, such blemishes have no audio affect and a splendid copy that is cleanly pressed without manufacture sounds or issues. Again, a lovely, scarcer label example to please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic debut album plays even above it’s visual grading to the maximum with little to fault. As stated already, Pye pressings at their best are fantastic, but they could prove variable and nothing can ever be taken for granted. This one has superb clean stereo sound that has a powerful mix and images beautifully. Check out that incredible short drum solo on ‘Dharma For One’. This plays with clean and dynamic sound and devoid of the dreaded distortions so many of the early copies have now inherited. The innermost songs with that delicate, difficult flute sections always are a concern for any copy played too many times on heavy-tracking equipment – no worries here, the sound is sharp with effortless tracking* and clarity. It should now remain so for many years when played on a modern lightweight turntable. This is not an easy album and so often it disappoints even on clean visual copies. This plays with very little unwanted, any surface sound little, gentle and faint – the odd trace near impossible to avoid on the very quietest area, that simply being realistic – especially being played on very revealing and clinical equipment, overall, this was a real joy. The final short song, the delicate ‘Round’ plays very well too, I have heard this sound horrible on some copies with major pressing noise and distortions, again this has hardly any issues at all. This merits strong recommendation for those wanting to experience what is practically a 1968 copy with a different label design, which is arguably actually rarer. The 1968 first issues were Pye pressed, thereafter these were contracted out to others as well, but the Pyes are always extra special when found near their best, and this one more than qualifies.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
