JFK PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN RECORD "LP"

AN ORIGINAL "KENNEDY FOR PRESIDENT" COMERCIAL THAT WAS PLAYED ON THE RADIO IN 1960

A VERY HISTORICAL PIECE

The subject of the commercial is if John Kennedy is elected will he have two loyalties, the Catholic Church and then the State, would he really be able to fulfill duties as president of the United States because he was a Catholic.

 

Kennedy comes out shooting

It seems as though Kennedy never even takes a breath, sounding a bit angry too and I don't blame him. It's very interesting to hear this as a major issue in a presidential campaign and hearing Kennedy address it now, almost 50 years later. It plays perfectly, the record has been well taken care of. In the first auction photo the record is shown on an old player that is just because that's how I have both pieces displayed. This record is a 33 1/2" and plays on our record players.

 

He quotes the Constitution a few times. Kennedy says no one asked him his religion when he was in the service during WWII. He states he will fulfill his oath of office whether he is president, a senator, or private citizen just as he has the past 14 years he has been in congress.

He certainly gets his point across and is direct when he speaks of looking at the issue this way;

No one can tell him he was disqualified to hold the office of President of the United States the day he was born.

As we know JFK's religion was a very serious issue in this campaign. We had never had a Catholic president. The only other person who was a Catholic and headed the ticket of a major party was Al Smith. Smith was the Democratic nominee in 1928. He was an "Irish-American", as was Kennedy. There was still even some prejudice against the Irish. Al Smith ended up losing the election to Herbert Hoover.

Smith’s Catholic beliefs played a key role in his loss of the Election of 1928. Many feared that he would answer to the pope and not the constitution. The same thing they were worried about with Kennedy in 1960, that he would answer to the Pope, his oath of office being secondary.

Putting a strong message like this out on the air waves was one way the campaign used to attack the issue.

It is wonderful hearing that powerful voice again remembering how it was and especially what we lost.

A very fine and important piece of Kennedy and political history.
