Description
JIM BOYD & His MEN OF THE WEST
Dixieland Boogie
For true fans of Western swing music, Bill Boyd rates with his contemporary, Bob Wills, even though the two utilized very different styles; whereas Wills & His Playboys often used horns and recorded songs from a variety of genres, Boyd remained true to his western roots, using only a string band, the Cowboy Ramblers.
With so much business pouring to the Boyd's doorstep, it's little surprise that brother Jim Boyd was employed by RCA in the western swing business too.
On the topside of this record is "Dixieland Boogie” which is a really fine country boogie woogie number. That’s Jim himself on the lead vocal. On the flip is “I Got Along Without You Before I Met You." This is record 48-0383 and is from September of 1950.
LISTEN TO PART OF THIS RECORD HERE!
As you can see, this is a 78rpm acetate from the studios at WRR Radio in Dallas. In the early ‘50s Bill Boyd came back to WRR as one of the DJs and it’s quite likely that he cut this acetate of his little brother’s band for some purpose, perhaps even as an advance before it’s official release. This seems to be a dub of the RCA version of the song – and doesn’t appear to be different in any way. The band were quite familiar around the station, since his brother Bill Boyd had a show on the station starting back in 1932, 18 years earlier – and Jim was in the band at that time.
