Here for auction is a superb example of the iconic live album by JIMI HENDRIX titled “BAND OF GYPSYS”, Catalogue Number 2406 002. This is an ORIGINAL 1970 UK STEREO PRESSING on the TRACK RECORD LABEL, with the earliest Av1, B=1 Matrix Numbers and a lovely ‘Isle Of Wight’ MacNeill Press gatefold sleeve. [Contrary to popular belief, the ‘Puppet’ sleeve and the rarer ‘Isle Of Wight’ sleeve were both released at the same time and came with 1st pressed Av1/B=1 vinyl].

The un-laminated gatefold sleeve, printed and made by MacNeill Press Limited, London, is in close to EX condition (strictly graded) with only the lightest of wear. The front and back covers and opening gatefold spread are unmarked. There are just a few half-moon type creases - mostly near the back opening edge. You can see from the photos that this is a very well preserved sleeve which should please most collectors.

The top quality Track record retains a deep mirror-like shine and sits flat and true on the turntable. It is a nice solid pressing with a tapered rim edge.

The Matrix Numbers and stampers are:

Side 1 – 2406002  Av1   1 1    0? 1  

Side 2 – 2406002  B=1   1 1    2 1  

Both sides are visually in EX+ condition with the exception of one short stylus mark at the start of Side 1 (see below). Apart from this there are just a few very light sleeve-removal type wispy marks visible under bright light, which are purely superficial and do not cause any audio problems. The beautiful matt black Track labels are unmarked with only 4 or 5 tiny spindle traces near the centres. There is no wear around the spindle hole. I am confident that the record has hardly been played.

PLAYGRADE ASSESSMENT:

This classic live recording was made at Fillmore East, New York in 1970. The sound quality is particularly raw and vibrant and sounds truly sensational played at loud volume. Apart from a few soft ticks during the lead-in to Track 1 of Side 1, the record plays perfectly. All frequencies are crystal clear. There is no discernable deterioration in sound quality and barely any unwanted noise at all. You simply will not find a significantly better playing copy of this wonderful album.  

Complete with the correct 1st issue white poly-lined inner sleeve which is in EX condition. This has “British Patent No…” and “MADE IN ENGLAND  HMO 1171  48” printed in blue text at the bottom.

GRADINGS

The records that I offer for sale have been critically play-graded, at loud volume, on a Rega Planar 3 turntable fitted with an Elys 2 cartridge. I will only sell records that play to a high standard. My gradings are strict and in accordance with the following descriptions:

·         MINT- Record is superb, almost like new, with just a few sleeve removal type surface marks and no deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve is near perfect in all respects.

·         EX Record is a top quality example, with just a few very light surface marks which do not sound, and barely any discernable deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve has slight wear and/or creasing.

·         VG+ Record has some visual surface marks, but still plays to a high standard without any major deterioration in sound quality – just a few clicks or light surface sound in places. Sleeve has normal wear and tear without any major defects. Still a very presentable sleeve

PACKAGING & POSTAGE

Records are sent out in new “Wrapro” record mailers. These are rectangular and strong, providing excellent protection to the edges and corners. Records are removed from both inner and outer sleeves in order to prevent seam-splits in transit.
