JIMI HENDRIX: BAND OF GYPSYS/ TRACK, 2406 002/ 1970.
This record is being sold as much for the rare original artwork as it is the brilliant music. The record is part of a small set that features beautiful hand painted artwork from a now long forgotten local artist from Hebden Bridge, a small Northern England town famed for it's counter-cultural aspects. The artwork was created in the early 70s, and I have examples featured on two Hendrix lps and a Hawkwind lp. See my other items for sale.
Here is Band of Gypsys, a first pressing, with withdrawn Puppet cover, 2406 002 the cat. number stamped in run-offs and also on the cover. The original poly lined inner sleeve has the patent no. 800513 & 973938 - Made in England 1271.
You will see from the photographs that the labels have been entirely hand painted over in a glorious image of Hendrix's face. Each label features the same colouration with hand painted tracklisting. You'll also note from the photos that one side of the inner sleeve features extended Hendrix artwork in the same colour paint. There are also typed out tracklistings and catalogue numbers etc cut out neatly and stuck to the sleeves. The whole work is a labour of love and an early 70s artwork in its own right.
Sadly this artwork/album was not looked after as well as might've been hoped. Played, created and long forgotten until the recent floods in the town brought an old and dusty box out of a cellar and sold at market, rescued from obscurity and loss.
That said the vinyl remains in overall very good+ shape, plays and sounds great with only an occasional moment of light crackle. Labels are obviously hand painted and the colours remain beautifully bright.
Inner sleeve, again hand painted, and featuring typescript tracklistings etc shows some staining and minor splits at centre of side edges.
The outer cover shows some wear/scuffing, slight ringwear, in overall vg shape, no splits, tears or writing and the typescript on the spine remains almost intact, just a couple of abrasions to letters.
