Description
The musically brilliant and very rare, high book value LP - "BAND OF GYPSYS" from the last JIMI HENDRIX band with the same name on TRACK RECORDS - SUPER 2406 002 ~ (STEREO 1970)
This is in stiff, medium weight 136 gram vinyl and has the matrix numbers:-
"2406 002 A Ö 1 1 1 2" on side A and
"2406 002 B = 1 1 1 1" on side B.
This copy then is one of the very earliest pressed, from the first Mother set, from very early stampers, as evidenced by the matrix numbers above and the very rare black labels with the "GYPSIES" misspelling, so it must represent a very sound investment for those into that, but it’s a very playable copy for those actually into the music, (like me!).
This record is gaining ground fast in value and you are unlikely to find another such good, very early first pressing copy in this genuine playable condition.
This auction then is for an exceptionally rare and highly collectable LP from JIMI; it is musically one of the finest recordings he ever made, in my opinion, and one he was justifiably proud of in truth, whilst - because of contractual ramifications - giving the appearance that he did not actually care for it, albeit being devastated by the lack of appreciation of the new musical direction by the reviewers and the public at the time.
Check my bidder’s feedback - you will see I describe my records 100% truthfully so you can bid in confidence.
The record itself is pressed in medium grade, fairly stiff vinyl, is very clean on both sides and it is completely flat, without any warps and with a truly central spindle hole, so it has no wow whatsoever. It does have *spindle marks on the labels, which are the correct silver print with satin black ground but only slight hole wear - it still has a tight spindle hole. *(After all, it was one of my most favourite plays, but it has been exceptionally well looked after, as all my records were),
As further proof of it’s early pressing, both labels bear the misspelling of BAND OF GYPSYS as "BAND OF GIPSIES"
There are very, very minor sleeve marks on the record surfaces, which has NO surface noise, NO clicks or jumps and NO crackles or pops and obviously NO scratches!
I have just played this EXTREMELY LOUD, to properly check it out once more, it’s still just completely brilliant! This is a real test for this LP as it has a lot of very quiet passages and on this copy, they are not spoilt by any surface noise or clicks or pops and it plays beautifully with absolutely no sign of any wear or audible distortion.
(I must be loopy clearing these records out, but I do not play them any more, which is sad............)
The cover is the original and famous and quickly withdrawn PUPPETS one , being a satin finish and unlaminated, MacNEILL PRESS LTD UK printed one, in good condition with just one very minor crease at the LHS and a small pressure mark by Jimi’s left sleeve, (invisible unless looked for hard ), no spine creases or splits, no record entry edge wear, no shelf wear, no writing, no stickers and just a tiny amount of pressure rubbing visible on the back.
This cover is bright and clean with no fading and is as good as you will get for one that has actually been used and not box stored!
The sleeve is the original and correct plastic lined, square bottom corners/ radiussed top, plain paper one, with no folds, one slight 12mm tear by the centre hole, minor age browning and no writing or marks.
Using the Record Collector grading system; the vinyl is thus better than EXCELLENT on both sides, (I would say, NEAR MINT, but this is not an available category!), the cover and sleeve are also EXCELLENT.
JIMI HENDRIX blew me away the first times I saw him play in London; I still remember the expression on Eric’s face when he first jammed with Cream at a Student Union college gig and I saw him as much as I could after that at gigs in London's Marquee and other Clubs and college gigs. I switched from lead to bass at that point; after all, he was already doing what I was just trying to do, so there really was no point carrying on after that!
The provenance is good for this record as I can vouch for it’s history, since I bought it new, via a mate who ran a record shop; generally, all my records are from my own personal collection, built up since the early 1960’s and have genuinely been played very little and then only on quality turntables, (Garrard Zero 100, Lab 80 and Goldring GL75), set up with a low tracking force, using Shure, then Grado then Stanton cartridges over the years. All records have been dry stored, vertically, in the dark in a proper custom made record shelving system and only ever played by myself and NEVER loaned to anyone and especially, never, ever partied!
If you are interested in early British R & B and Progressive Rock Bands and the USA West Coast bands of the time then please add me to your favourites as I do have some rarities that I have never seen on eBay. I generally do not go in for all the b******s about rare first pressings and the excessive detailing of group histories that I see other sellers boring eBay members with, and will describe the records honestly, just indicating the basics.
It's a fact however, that many of mine are such early copies because I was buying the records of bands I was watching gigging at the time, as they flourished, got their recording deals and issued their early records, so I obviously mention this when I do such listings.
