Jimi Hendrix : Band Of Gypsys 1/1 1st Press

This is a final upgrade archive first press of that I have no doubt.  The vinyl is super clean with no scratches and has only ever been lightly played judging by the minimal spindle wear.  The 'Puppet' cover is also in fantastic condition, the best I have seen in many a year.

 Visual grading

  The vinyl is visually stunning and retains a pristine mirror-like glossy sheen and has been so well preserved over the decades.  I have never seen cleaner.  There are no scratches and there are only a handful of faint on S2, I cannot see any on S1 it is immaculate!  There is very little spindle wear suggesting the vinyl has only ever been sparingly played and the clarity of the audio confirms that assumption.  The only negative if you can call it that is that the record has one minor 'kink' on the edge but it only results in a very gentle lift and does not affect the audio in any way.  The labels and run out grooves are also in superb condition with no marking etc.

Play grading

With barely any static on the spoken intro 'Who Knows' plays superbly from the very first groove and this stunning quality is prevalent throughout the entire track.  Jimi's guitar plays in sublime fashion and there is no distortion on the top end at all.  The clarity is of the highest standard and during the quieter bass/vocal section the playback is of an incredible standard.  A couple of light 'ticks' but that is all, no clicks or pops and no static or crackle either.  The mega quiet almost silent section just has to be heard to be believed!  The clarity is astounding and again there is nothing that intrudes on the fantastic quality of the audio.  There are a couple of light clicks as you exit this section but quite honestly audio does not get much better than this!  The guitar piece that closes this track is just awesome!  This is easily the 'cleanest' version I have ever heard.

Jimi's spoken intro on 'Machine Gun' has only a hint of mega light static at the very start and is then nigh on perfect.  The guitar intro then plays with great precision, barely any static and there are no clicks or pops.  It continues to play with breathtaking quality and the guitar work here is stunning.  No distortion just pure Near Mint audio all the way and the strong bass work complements the sound so well.  This is a stunning version of this live classic and there is no intrusive interference at all.  There is a minimal amount of light static during the mega quiet section towards the end but it is very much in the background.  Not one click or pop!

'Changes' has only minimal static on the intro and then plays with stunning depth and power.  With a fantastic bass line this track plays with astounding clarity and is easily the most impressive version I have ever heard.  Again no distortion and barely any static this is a Near Mint version without doubt.  The sonic quality is stunning.

 There is then almost complete silence in the dead wax prior to the next track and 'Power Of Soul' then plays with mind-blowing quality!  The opening guitar work is so powerful and the definition is so good i.e. you can hear note with 100% perfect precision.  This is audio of the highest standard and this vinyl is not far off 50 years old!  A stunning version this plays as 'clean' as it did back in '70 if not better on my stereo!  Again the quiet sections play with superb accuracy and the louder sections with such incredible dynamism.  Wow what a version!

'Message To Love' is of exactly the same standard and again the clarity of the sound could not be any clearer.  No more needs to be said, this is just Mint- audio of the highest calibre.  

You won't surprised to hear that 'We Gotta Live Together' is of the same impeccable quality.  The intro is quite simply stunning and again the depth and warmth of the audio cannot be improved upon.  From start to finish there is no interference whatsoever.  There is no groove wear on the vinyl and that shows in the clarity on offer here.  Not only that but this is one superbly well preserved vinyl and this track provides a stunning end to the album.  No distortion, no clicks or pops, not one iota of interference.  Absolutely stunning!

In summary this first pressing plays with sublime sound from beginning to end.  There is not a single click or pop and it is patently obvious that this this record has only ever been very lightly played.  There is decent clarity and then there is 'high end' clarity where the depth and sonic quality of the audio could not be any better.  This is one of those!  This also has to be the most impressive 'Puppet' covers that I have ever seen.  With barely any wear it would grace any collection.

The Cover

This is without doubt the most impressive 'Puppet' cover I have ever seen.  It is regularly found in poor condition but this is not one of these!  There is only minimal rubbing along the top edge and whilst there is more on the bottom edge it is not obvious and not 'wrecked' like so many!  The thin pinched spine is also super clean and remains 100% legible with only a little rubbing on the two corners.  The right hand corners are in great shape with just some minor rubbing on the leading edges and the opening edge is in fantastic condition with barely any wear.  The front cover is incredibly clean with no markings and only a couple of mega faint creases and the back cover much the same with only one faint corner crease.  This iconic cover really is in wonderful condition and they don't get much better than this!  A fantastic example.

Inner sleeve

This includes an original poly-lined 'Plastic Bags...' inner and is in excellent condition with no splits and only one very small tear on the 'window'.  There is a little creasing also.

The labels

The 'Track Record' labels are so clean with very little spindle wear and they have no marking or writing on them.  They could not be any cleaner if I'm honest!

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers
