Label/Format: Track – intense matt black finish. Interesting the two different spellings of Gipsies that vary on label to cover.

Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive and very black indeed. Spindle marks are few in number and fairly light (lighter still on side B). Matt black labels are revealing, so any marks will show. Although this one has the second issue cover – still far from common – it is a very early pressed record with very early matrixes and stampers (seen below). All Hendrix fans will know, the original ‘Puppet Doll’ cover, was quickly withdrawn from sale and replaced by this matt gatefold cover. Most seen are Polydor pressings that again changed the cover to something totally different.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Scarce: like most Hendrix albums on Track, these were all soon to be repressed on Polydor. Initial runs of this album has the Puppet cover, it was withdrawn and changed to this gatefold style with totally different artwork. Unusually, and possibly made in haste, this included no text on front, back or spine, so it was far from obvious what it even was without looking inside. The early-pressed intense black Track records were simply transferred to this new cover and are not that easy to find, especially with a lesser-played record. So often this one is seen trashed.

Brief Info: Issued when Hendrix was still alive after he disbanded the ‘Experience’, this was the last album under his control and was a live set recorded at the Fillmore East, New York in 1970. The songs were all new. A great performance even if the sound is a little muted and a legendary album. Initial copies had the Puppet or doll cover, it was withdrawn and replaced with totally different artwork as per here. One thing both covers did share however was their vulnerability to wear. Both are seldom seen without substantial rubbing, ringwear and general ageing. This dark cover probably even more prone and this one is not perfect, but with less wear than many seen. The record is very clean, modestly played and offers very fine sound with little unwanted. So this still very early pressed Track copy, and essential for collectors with a terrific portrait of the man on a very different, and again quite a limited run new cover.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold cover with a light surface sheen. Printed and made in England by MacNeill. All sides are smooth finished, the inside is more a flat matt.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: The odd tiny tip-in possible – little apparent.

Cover Front: A difficult cover, most of them are seen rubbed and badly worn. This has rubbing on the corner tips, any rubbing to the main surface very light, viewed normally full-on, little shows at all. The same goes for surface marks or creasing, again a few of but more seen under angled light. Overall, still attractive but not for perfectionists of course.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same, the lack of ringwear being a significant plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Minor handling traces, little else and still impressive.

Top Edges: Mostly light, very patchy rubbing. Both straight and flush.

Bottom Edges: Light to moderate patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with little wear and both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Record enters on the back edge that only has minimal thickening or burr traces, any seen viewed end-on.

Spine and Text: A little very patchy rubbing to the main surface, only small traces on the vulnerable folds. Most wear on the very ends. Solid, straight with minimal compression, a gentle light tilt to left only. No text was printed on this spine.

Corners: Moderate to moderate(+) tip rubbing, never easy to avoid on this one. Mainly fine shape retained but rubbed.

Cover Summary: Still an attractive, and not that common second printing of this album cover, this replaced the Puppet original that was withdrawn from sale. Not for the perfectionist as the grading informs, but many collectors will enjoy it – and the early pressed record is very nice indeed.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the Polydor-style lined inner is date coded 1271 (December 1971) and in very impressive, little-aged condition. Two perfect window circles and the lining clear. All edges are unsplit with no repairs and barely any creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to with just very light, fine and faint surface trace marks visible only under light. Mostly whispy types probably from dry-cloth ‘cleaning’ that are totally harmless. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy with only modest plays and many people still consider a first issue. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarcer Track record plays even above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is as good as it gets, but not the most outstanding in terms of dynamic range but a more typical live album production for this period. Any surface sound minimal, light and infrequent – this an album with several quiet passages so the odd trace is immensely difficult to avoid totally, as is the odd sporadic click here and there. Overall, a very clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. Few copies will outperform this quality Track pressing significantly I feel sure – so many seen are Polydor, those to my mind being the real reissues – Hendrix on Track are the originals as far as I am concerned, and are far more prized and special. Very little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality, still early example. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
