Label/Format: Track – intense matt black surfaces with a very gentle hint of texturing. Interesting the two different spellings of Gipsies that vary on label to cover.

Label Conditions: Two impressive Track labels that are clean, fresh and attractive with only three or four spindle marks on what are always very revealing surfaces. All suggests, including the clean quality sound, this record has been played very little.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: The very first-made copies included the famous Puppet cover which was fairly quickly withdrawn from sale. A totally new cover was quickly made with the superb picture of hendrix instead of the dolls, but the records were the same. The puppet cover ‘originals’ are scarce, but very early new cover examples are hardly common either, especially in better conditions.

Brief Info: Issued when Hendrix was still alive after he disbanded the ‘Experience’, this was the last album under his control and was a live set recorded at the Fillmore East, New York in 1970. The songs were all new. A great performance with a quite raw sound that work perfectly, a legendary album famed for it’s original cover. It was quite quickly withdrawn adding to its mystery. This copy has the first reprinted cover design, now a gatefold format with a great picture of the man. Needless to say, this has some superb virtuoso guitar breaks and includes the impressive ‘Machine Gun’. It can be argued it does not hit the dizzy heights of the three previous albums, but it is still an impressive set, and this a very fine example.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to, one that seldom wears well. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the original 03/71 (March 1971) date-coded inner sleeve which dates this copy perfectly.

Cover Front: This replaced the puppet cover, and it has been stated many Hendrix fans preferred it. Unusually the outside faces include no text. The front with its full portrait of the man is impressive, and this is one that often wear badly. Some corner tip rubbing and a few very gentle surface creases apart, it has little else to fault. A faint trace of rim dulling seen under light from the thick record, but avoiding ugly penetrating ring wear and general rubbing or sticker issues, this front will prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same, any marks or blemishes few, very fine and light.

Cover Inside: Any blemishes or handling traces inside are very few, fine and light. This has also fared well.

Top & Bottom Edges: All are straight, flat and flush. the top pair have only very light rub traces. The lower storage edges have light to moderate patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening minimal and very light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light, possibly a little faded. The surface and folds hardly worn except the very ends. No text was printed on this one.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with quite fine or better shape retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: Being so different to the puppet cover, many Hendrix fans and collectors want both versions, and understandly so. This still an attractive example of this first, second issue cover, and with most of any wear on the corner tips and bottom storage edges ,which is hardly heavy, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the Polydor-style inner is in lovely condition and only gently aged with the usual darkening of the seam area adhesive. It includes the still very early date-code 0371 (March 1971). No hard creases, any crinkle little and light. Both window circles are crisp and very neat indeed with no damage at all, the polylining clear with a couple of fine creases. All edges solidly intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. Under light, side one is seen with light inner sleeve dulling, but hardly registers in average room light. A very common trait where a record has been left inside its inner for many years, the surface gently adheres to the polylining causing a faint gentle pattern which is usually totally harmless (unless severe). Here very light and purely superficial with no audio sound whatsoever. In fact the record plays beautifully throughout. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any real surface marks few, light and faint as seen critically under bright light again. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room little even register. Visually a very fine record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. An album with some very quiet passages, so total silence is a very difficult ask for vintage vinyl, but this has little at all. Few available copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been quite well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality Track record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
