Label Conditions: Two impressive ultimate first issue Track labels for this important Hendrix release. These are clean, fresh and attractive with only few spindle marks on revealing surfaces. Visible more under light, but amongst the fewest I have seen on this album.

Rarity: Quite Rare with the withdrawn ‘Puppet’ cover, especially so in this lovely clean and attractive condition. This was not available for very long and when reissued, the cover was changed entirely making this one of the most sort-after Hendrix albums ever made. The famous ‘Puppet’ cover is much prized, cherished and collectable from the legend that was Jimi Hendrix. A fragile one as well, those that do surface are often in very poor, even badly damaged condition. Incredibly prone to sticker pulls and severe damage from their removal. Seldom seen without heavy ring wear and rubbing, also creasing due to the very thin card. This one has little to fault and for pure looks, it will take a near remarkable one to better it significantly. Along with a very little played first pressed record that plays impressively, and June 1970 dated inner sleeve, this is a copy to please many collectors.

Brief Info: Can any album cover actually ever be more important than the record? Well it can be argued this one has a case. The artwork is simply fantastic and here looking impressive as seen. The fact it was hastily withdrawn adds to it’s mystery and for a long time now, this has been a most prized piece of early 1970s artwork.

Issued when Hendrix was still alive after he disbanded the ‘Experience’, this was the last album under his control and was a live set recorded at the Fillmore East, New York in 1970. The songs were all new. A great performance with a quite raw sound that work perfectly, a legendary album famed for it’s original cover. Needless to say, this has some superb virtuoso guitar breaks and includes the impressive ‘Machine Gun’. But it can be argued it does not hit the dizzy heights of the three previous albums which I think is fair enough to say. The original sleeve known as the ‘Puppet’ cover, it features dolls of Hendrix, Brian Jones, Bob Dylan and DJ, John Peel. It was withdrawn relatively quickly and replaced with totally different artwork, it has become one of the most sort-after covers in rock history and is hard to find in even respectable condition. Obviously the album that came with this sleeve were the true originals. Note the error on the back cover, the Hendrix doll is playing right handed – was this the reason it was withdrawn?, probably not, it seems the concensus opinion is fans of the time thought it in bad taste. This is one of the best examples I had for some time – a super cover as I hope my pictures, including those crucial close-ups reiterate. The record looks and plays impressively, a couple or three sporadic ticks which are always difficult to avoid totally with some very quiet passages. But this is very well pressed and the vast majority plays with hardly anything else to fault. All elements of this set are high quality and should please many Hendrix fans and collectors. It even includes the original June 1970 date-coded inner sleeve, also in very clean condition for good measure.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better for a cover that seldom wears well. This is a single, matt finished unlaminated cover and made with thin, smooth card. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the original 06/70 (June 1970) date-coded inner sleeve as pictured.

Cover Front: Without doubt one of the most famous, and controversial covers in the history of rock, one seldom seen because it’s quick withdrawl from sale in the UK. A small tip rub on the bottom right and a tiny few very fine surface creases that show little. The unforgiving dark surface has hardly any rubbing and is aged little. The lack of ring wear and sticker marks are both major pluses. Just enough to politely remind it is a 47 year-old cover, but it will take an amazing example to better it significantly.

Cover Back: One or two very fine and gentle surface marks (seen up close), the odd tiny faint rub and a couple of light creases. Being paler than the front, a little gentle toning is faintly evident. A little age to an original cover gives it character in my opinion, but clues are only light. Overall, this is a very fine back to complement the impressive front.

Top & Bottom Edges: The top edge is very straight with hardly any wear at all. The bottom storage edge a little less straight (being critical), with any rubbing little and light. Both have fared well all considered.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening or burring very little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with any compression patchy and quite light as seen – the ends are pinched in manufacture. The fragile text is fully present and intact, also very well centred for good measure. Not so easy to find as such, more often seen badly rubbed or even threadbare, like the other edges, this perilous spine as fared generally well.

Corners: The top pair have little to fault with excellent shape retained. The lower ones have a little rubbing, most on right with very fine shape, probably better still for the left one, a tiny dink hint on the right.

Cover Summary: A much prized item, elusive and hugely collectable, and justifiably so. This an attractive example with only light clues to age. With most areas in such fine overall condition, this will prove difficult to find better and should please many fans and collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): the Polydor-style inner is in superbe condition, and has the earliest date-code of 0670 (June 1970). It has the usual seam adhesive darkening to remind of age as most will, but not a lot else. No hard creases, any crinkle little and light. Both window circles are crisp and very neat indeed with no damage at all, the polylining clear and unusually fresh. No edge splits or repairs guaranteed.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): this looks little played. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. Any surface marks are fine and mostly very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. A couple of fine longer hairlines on side one, only half-a-dozen or so sporadic gentle ticks heard and little else at all. Side two plays almost perfectly, and in context, side one is very impressive as well considering the quiet passages present, few will ever avoid the odd blemish at very best. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rarer first pressed record plays for most of entirety above it’s visual grading with very little to fault bar the light sporadic clicks mentioned above, the real music areas are impressively clean throughout. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is as good as it gets, but not the most outstanding in terms of dynamic range but a more typical live album production for this period. Minimal traces of surface sound and no hidden pressing issues or nasties – silence is nigh-on impossible in places that has almost no sound – especially being played on such critical equipment (listed further down). This a very clean pressing for a challenging album with no tracking issues*. Few available originals will better this significantly I feel sure. An album that often attracts deep penetrating scratches from old heavy-tracking record players of the era, especially on the very quiet areas. So in context, this one has survived the era very well indeed and can still be enjoyed to the near maximum (unless ‘perfection’ is mandatory), and good luck with that. Both channels are clean and sharp, with no degrading of the sound. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. Many, if not most Hendrix fans and collectors will enjoy this record (and cover), it could prove difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
