After the release of Axis Bold As Love, softer disc with keeping ballads like "Little Wing", "Bold As Love" and "Castles Made Of Sand", comes the third album, the double Electric Ladyland, Hendrix where he deepens his vein psychedelic and hard rock, the same as "Purple Haze" and "Foxy Lady". The disc is promising since the cover (in the censored version on CD): a set of photos, some of which reported the bare breasts, and were considered pornographic. It begins with a song that mentions the music of Broadway, "And the Gods Made Love", followed by a little 'blues sung in falsetto ( "Have You Ever Been"); The third track is a wild and fast rock'n'roll, "Crosstown Traffic", which during the Hendrix tour sounded disc a hellish version of eight minutes, after which comes one of the great masterpieces of the disc, with the contribution of great Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith) organ and Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane) on bass: "Voodoo Chile", the charming and famous electric blues of fifteen minutes, one of the first songs to overcome the classic duration of the songs, preceded by "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly. After the A side, the B begins with "Little Miss Strange", composed and sung by the group's bassist Noel Redding, which follows another song with a guest: "Long Hot Summer Night", where Al Kooper (Super Session ) masterfully plays the piano; beginning, Hendrix was not sure of the order of this song and the one that follows, "Come On (Let The Good Times Roll)", a cover of Earl King, which begins with an attack unmistakable based energy pure and breaks out into four different frenetic solos, one of which lasts more than two minutes, the four of duration of the song (!). With a now famous drum attack, comes another of the many masterpieces of the disc: "Gypsy Eyes", dedicated to the mother of the great guitarist, died when he was only eleven; the B-side ends with one of the most psychedelic songs of Hendrix (the only one on this record, along with "1983"): "Of Burning the Midnight Lamp". The C side opens with a cough and "Rainy Day, Dream Away", a song from lightweight text ( "Rainy day, dreaming all day"), which have helped Mike Finnigan organ, Freddie Smith and Larry Faucette to congas, while the drummer Buddy Miles, who still work with Hendrix in "Band Of Gypsies". The song has a second part in "Still Raining, Still Dreaming", on the side D. After "Rainy Day", Hendrix gives us another great test of his compositional skills, with the song perhaps most beautiful of the entire disk, " 1983 (a Merman I Should Turn to be) ", one psichedelicissimo blues (in which he also plays the flute player Chris Wood, another of Traffic), stretching until it became almost imperceptibly" Moon, Turn the Tides ". The last side includes the three most famous songs on the disc; after "Still Raining, Still Dreaming", as said second part of "Rainy Day", together with the same collaborators, with an attack guncotton of "House Burning Down", which has become famous thanks to its chorus ( "Look at the sky turn a hell fire red, somebody's house is burnin 'down down, down down ") and its closure, with the Hendrix guitar to imitate the collapse of the house (a timbre gimmick that would later use in Woodstock to recall the bombing in Vietnam in his version of "Star Spangled Banner"). At its conclusion, here is another masterpiece: "All Along the Watchtower", the beautiful cover of Bob Dylan's piece, which is also a version (available in South Saturn Delta) with Dave Mason of Traffic on bass and Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones on percussion. The album closes with one of the most powerful pieces and effect of the whole repertoire Hendrix, another testament to his hard-rock vein, "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)", with three solos interspersed with delusional jokes ( "I ergo next to a mountain and Shot down with the edge of the hand "), a famous chorus," Cause I'm a Voodoo Chile, Lord knows I'm a Voodoo Chile ". In the original project, the album would also include "Tax Free", which was still played during the tour; also it can be traced to "South Saturn Delta".
Along with the concerts at the Fillmore East and Woodstock, and the previous Are You Experienced ?, Electric Ladyland is the apogee of Hendrix music and a central disc in rock history.
