Label/Format: Track – deep intense black surfaces with matt finish. The surfaces appear to have a very gentle and fine surface texturing and look lovely. But they feel quite smooth to the fingertip, the odd small natural ‘rustic’ area on side two.

Label Conditions & Overview: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Spindle marks only light to light(+) and amongst the least I have seen on a mono copy of this massively popular and sort-after album. These are mainly fine and faint, also hardly any go outside the small inner ring circle. This reitterates to me, the alignment on the platter was done with due care and using this tiny area for hole location. Even on these very revealing labels, the spindle marks show little and mostly only with more scrutiny under angled light. This record plays with SUPERB and VERY CLEAN sound throughout with NO groove wear at all, a mere couple of faint ticks on ‘EXP’ that opens side one with any surface sound minimal, very faint and highly infrequent. Although the record has a few fine and light surface marks – and how many VERY popular played albums dating back to the latter part of the 1960s in mono will not have a tiny few as a bare minimum? – this top quality pressed example plays superbly. This also on a very revealing Linn LP12 turntable for which such records were not really designed. No penetrating stylus scratches and most importantly, NO groove wear or sound deterioration at all. An evergreen classic with outstanding warm, detailed mono sound – for many the definitive way to experience this landmark piece of rock psychedelia.

Rarity: Rare: and these days getting very rare indeed especially with the insert (often referred to as a ‘poster’). The mono version arguably a little easier to find than the stereo, but MUCH harder to find in lesser-played conditions and still offering top quality sound with hardly anything unwanted. The ‘Summer of Love’ was still very much the era for the mono record with the majority of casual listeners owning single speaker record players, often very basic bordering on crude. Early copies are often trashed beyond use – this is NOT one of them – this vintage mono copy was a pure delight to play-grade. The playing surfaces are still clean and shiny and have no sinister marks or tracking issues. Most of any visual blemishes fine and light – all bar one tiny speck on ‘ESP’ non-sounding. It offers very impressive clean, fully focused sound with a still very attractive cover and beautiful insert sheet. This Hendrix masterwork will not prove easy to find much better, especially in mono.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Always a pleasure to offer a very clean played mono copy of this Hendrix treasure - the second of the three Experience classics - they are getting very hard to find at all now here in the UK, nice copies that play well are even more elusive. This album charted at 5 and 3 in the UK and US respectively, a hugely strong follow-up to the classic Are You Experienced, slightly less demonstrative of his guitar skills but proving himself as a formidable song writer, including several reflective compositions none better than the haunting ‘Little Wing’. Axis… always features high in any list of all times greats and justifiably so. How many times do you see this record offered, just to find its been played to destruction? This one plays very impressively with very little unwanted, this also being played on a very revealing Linn LP12 Sondek which I play all my records on. It seems the majority prefer the mono mix of this record – both are essential really as the music is presented (of course) very differently. The mono having a very warm, more punchy sound with fantastic detail. Not for the visual perfectionist – such examples being near impossible to find, and then at what cost? This complete and attractive example sets a high standard and many collectors will treasure it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A gatefold format with a laminated front and back. This ends inside the centre spread on four external flipbacks situated on the top and bottom edges. Printed and made by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd, London. No text printed on this spine and this is a dual purpose mono and stereo cover. The Polydor inner is included and a very impressive original lyric insert ‘poster’ sheet.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: Very little apparent, maybe a tiny scuff tip-in on the bottom edge.

Lamination – Front & Back: This is a cover that often suffers major laminate issues, especially peeling and chipping of the edges. So glad to state this has quite few and most are only small as seen on the very top edge towards the left of the front. There are some corner rubs for which this cover seldom escape, but the main areas and artwork remain very impressive and attractive. Both sides retain very fine shine and high degree of freshness and clarity. Most of any dulling only very light, mainly on the back from the thick record rim as seen under angled light. Very little creasing at all with any surface marks ultra fine and faint, again viewed critically and up close. A cover known not to wear too well, but this one remains impressive, if not ‘perfect’. I for one have no qualms in being gently reminded of the true vintage of any classic album cover, it gives that ultimate reassurance of owning the real thing.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is absolutely SUPERB with barely anything to fault. Being matt finished, a few light handling traces from the fingers is near impossible to avoid on a cover this substantial age – but this has hardly any, and those few present are very light and faint indeed. Crucially, those four flipbacks on the top and bottom edges are near immaculate with no wear, damage or even edge burring – they even retain superb shine. No area has stuck or pulled and that in-itself is rare but the most welcome news. The man’s picture has an eerie presence and adds a real sense of awe to this classic cover – without doubt, one of the most iconic centrespreads in rock history.

Top Edges: Both are very impressive neat and close near flush. The back has just one microscopic surface chip. The front half-a-dozen or so, but all are very small indeed, bordering on tiny. As stated, this cover is well known for chipping and is seldom seen without some. The front right corner tip has a moderate rub.

Bottom Edges: The front has a couple of very fine, small chips and one small scuff/rub. The back has largely escaped anything of note at all. Even tip rubs here are small and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both are neat and crisp, the front naturally in manufacture not trimmed quite flush with a very fine sliver of card seen on the front. Clean, sharp with minimal traces of any thickening or burring, even viewed end-on. Both edges also have avoided chipping and these have no been trimmed or enhanced. Entrance for the record is via the back, the front is sealed. Also these also lie quite flat and near flush with minimal trace of any curl, again that is often the case with full laminate.

Spine and Text: The spine is a crucial and critical area of this cover and very rarely does it escape laminate peeling, chipping, damage and considerable surface loss from flaking. The ends have rubbed: the top with a moderate rub, the bottom only quite small. Overall still very solid, straight some compression near the top. Folded square, so (allowing for the relatively light compression), the edges meet up close to flush and near parallel. The main surface including the fold hinges retain (the top corner apart) all the artwork that wraps around with no flaking or surface loosening. A fine natural central crease (fine laminate crack) is impossible to avoid purely by opening. So not perfect, will any one ever be these days? But this for me, compared to a number I have seen, is above average and still looks neat with practically all the graphic intact.

Corners: All corners have rubbed, ranging from light to a little above moderate (top left). The spine top a little rounded with the others retaining fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A lovely item, some blemishes or minor wear traces, yes, but nothing really serious and this will better probably the majority offered. This vintage cover is somewhat above average and importantly, if can be held and enjoyed with no ugly damages or excessive wear as I hope my pictures show. Not for the perfectionists, should a ‘perfect’ one ever appear, they command massive prices and are way out of reach for many average collectors. Knowing how badly this cover can and does wear, this will please many, and possibly even most collectors.

The Insert ‘Poster’: EXCELLENT(+): firstly, this is the genuine article, photocopies will be around and offered as the real thing, but they should fool no one but beware! Deep magenta text on a very deep orange background, printing quality can vary with the text sometimes looking fuzzy. This one has text clear, sharp and focused making the lyrics far more easy to read. It is a notorious fragile item that fades, tears and creases badly if not looked after properly. This example is unmounted, e.g. no pin-holes or tape marks and has minimal creasing. A light semi-crease on the front top edge towards the corner ends and a gentle hint of ripple simply from holding over time. Made with thin paper, so a little fine crinkle traces are near impossible to avoid. This retains ultimate colour and freshness with no marks, splits, tears or toning. Even the back is still very white and avoiding discolouration. Being honest, the owner hardly seemed aware it was inside and I doubt if this has seen light-of-day for decades. All edges and corners are crisp and uncreased and this rare and splendid insert sheet will prove hard to find much better.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a polylined Polydor style inner that is British patented. Fairly gently aged with the usual seam adhesive darkening and one edge with a narrow vertical crease. Two neat crisp window circles and clear lining. All edges unsplit with no repairs. This one date-coded 1/069 (June 1969).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): and this does not really do this splendid mono record full justice. Viewed critically under bright angled light, there are very fine surface marks, mostly quite whispy with only a small few thicker and seen more in normal daylight conditions. These surface marks are purely superficial, harmless and non-sounding. As stated further up, a near microscopic spot on ‘EXP’ has a couple of faint ticks and little else. There are no penetrating stylus scratches and this has avoided any arm drops or jolts that often write-off such mono records. Both playing surfaces retain an impressive shine, freshness with no scuffs or dulling. With two superb labels and impressive surfaces, this has more than survived that perilous mono record player times and certainly has not been played too many times. All this reflected with very impressive clean sound with all remaining focused, precise and sharp. Visually this is a very impressive vintage record that should please many collectors. Like the cover, should an unmarked mono original be offered, it will command a massive price, and being truly honest, I bet it will sound little better than this very impresive example.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic second Hendrix album plays even above it’s solid visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only modestly and has suffered no degrading from any usage. Yes, it has mainly fine surface marks as most popular records of this vintage so often do, but when they have next to know affect on sound, why worry? Get this on to a worthy system and simply enjoy the amazing sound and music. A couple of faint ticks on ‘ESP’, probably the least I have heard in years on a mono copy, as this opening track so often fairs badly being so quiet at the very beginning. Little else throughout and this impressive record will take a huge amount of beating. The mono mix has a very warm sound, especially in the bass frequencies and the detail and presentation of the music always impressive. Obviously the separation is missing, but it seems most collectors want the mono version – both for me are crucial anyway. A real joy to play-grade, I have heard few better and that is the honest truth. Mono copies are always the most challenging to find with top sound, so many rendered unplayable or listenable by heavy usage with worn, basic stylus – most tracking at massive weights. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the music and vocals all focused, clear and crackle-free. This will prove very difficult to find significantly better, especially for sound, this is an impressive all-round copy that more than merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
