Label/Format: Atlantic – original red and maroon (‘Plum’) format. These all have matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: All six mostly very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, few and faint spindle marks (some even less) and no wear around the hole area. A couple or three have light dull spotting seen under angled light, that purely a trait of being inside polylined inners for over 44 years. The playing surfaces however have escaped any bag rash, that never certain on Polydor group records. These original Plum label records are all exceptional with sound to match.

Cat Number: 2663001.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 125 / 144 / 125 grams. Two good solid average weights, one somewhat above average.

Country of Manufacture: England [that is the entire set including the main cover. Many of these used the imported American cover and the UK E. J. Day version being more elusive of the two].

Rarity: First UK issues on the Plum Atlantic label are scarce, especially hardly played. Those including the original ‘Day’ covers are harder still.

Brief Info: The first of two ‘Woodstock’ albums, this being the UK triple set on the first Atlantic ‘Plum’ labels. A copy includes the UK-printed cover, most are seen with the US version. Most who will be interested in this legendary album will know all about it. Suffice to say, quite possibly the best-known music festival of all-time, and here encaptured on to six superb hardly played sides. The Hendrix ‘Star Spangled Banner’ solo has become one of the most iconic live pieces ever recorded and the set is awash with talent from this era of quality music. Can any serious rock collection be without this landmark event and legendary piece of rock history?

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a heavy and thick double gatefold cover with the UK Atlantic 2663001 number. All surfaces are unlaminated with matt finish. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, and all three original mirror-image polylined inner sleeves are included as seen in close-up.

Cover Front: Firstly, the UK ‘Day’ covers are scarce, most UK copies of this include the American Cotillion imported sleeve. Also this clearly is a cover highly prone to all forms of wear – single gatefolds are perilous enough – double gatefolds have even less chance of time. So I consider this is a very fine example overall. One minor very fine rub on a semi-crease, and a little rubbing on the bottom corners, but little else. Generally clean and with still fresh artwork, this front sets a high standard.

Cover Back: The back has hardly any wear, but does have a small light name near the top right corner. The lack of ringwear is a major plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: All other four faces are in super condition with little to fault at all bar the odd minor tip rub.

Top Edges: These multi-edges are where the records are stored. All are neat and undamaged, any thickening minor indeed, even viewed end-on. The card end a little darkened as you almost have to expect, but this proves there has been no trimming or enhancements.

Bottom Edges: All these are closed to hold the records inside, all have moderate rubbing, but NO splits or repairs. Actually still quite neat for storage edges as well, the rubbing confined to the actual edge and not spreading to the main faces.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Robust and thick to support the cover. A little patchy rubbing on the bottom fold but the majority of the graphic still very much intact.

Spine and Text: This similar to above, thick again but this time including the text. A little light patchy rubbing to the catalogue number but the title – woodstock – is totally unworn. This edge has actually fair well as well, somewhat against the odds. Below this thick edge is the much thinner secondary folded edge, this has little wear either.

Corners: The outer exposed corners have light to moderate rubbing, the inner ones that are naturally better protected, have less. Fine to very fine shape mostly retained, the inner ones better.

Cover Summary: A very challenging heavy-weight cover, and a strong all-round example of this more elusive E. J. Day UK version. A fine smallish name and only light edge wear apart, this will take some beating and should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(–): all three are the same being batch ‘25’ and date-coded 0670 (June 1970) as seen in close-up. All are polylined and two have corner creasing and crinkle, the other less so. One window circle had torn, I repaired this as neatly as possible, all others are crisp and still mainly neat. The usual toning the seam adhesive but all edges are unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): six superb sides that are very clean with excellent shine and solidly/very solidly pressed. Three records hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces bordering on minuscule, even viewed under bright angled light. Visually fantastic historic records that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Six sides of the very best, this legendary festival album is in totally age-defying condition. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with even the quiet passages playing impressively. Few originals will match, let outperform this early ‘plum’ pressing I feel sure. I am certain these records have been played very lightly and have been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these lovely records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
