Jimmy La Vaca fans — and the swinginest timbale player in the business has many — will welcome the big guy's first disking for Gone Records. His unique style, fluency in ideas and impeccable taste now guarantee him an even wider renown through exposure beyond the club and hotel circuit.
La Vaca's sophisticated rhythmic effects are relaxed and restrained, but never does the tempo flag — be it cha cha, rumba, bolero, mambo or meringue. Here he and his boys take popular standards and give them refreshingly exotic treatment via authentic Spanish harmonies. The performances are clean and well put-together. Gone's engineers have taken great care with the balance on this disk, so that each instrument is picked up properly. The result is that the group sounds exactly on wax as it does live — really playing well "in clave."
La Vaca was born James Santiago on Dec. 24, 1929 New York City. Jimmy's father was Don Santiago, "King of Meringue." La Vaca followed papa around, keeping time to music by beating boxes or chairs or whatever else he could lay his hands on that would give back a rhythm. So, Don Santiago gave in when the lad was eight, and bought him his first set of drums. It wasn't too long after that Jimmy started tagging along after his father's band, sitting in on dates and playing bongo and conga in some of New York's best halls and night clubs.
As he grew older, the dynamic La Vaca began playing with the greatest of the Latin bands. His stints included several years with Jose Curbello, with whom he appeared on CBS-TV's Paul Whiteman Show, and three-and-a-half years with the La Playa Sextet. After an enormously successful appearance with Lionel Hampton on a Dean Martin telathon, La Vaca got many tempting offers to go on his own. A year ago he formed the "Jimmy La Vaca Band" and booked into Miami Beach's Shore Club Hotel, where he's been ever since.

Disc shows evidence of handling and play, though, all things considered, sounds great!
Graphics are great, I love the girl with the maracas, she's terrific!
Front of the Sleeve shows minor denting issue of all four corners; one corner, the lower right, has been slightly bent.
Rear of the Sleeve has a very minor stain, on the far left side, about an inch from the bottom, next to the word 'New' of New York City.
