Jimmy Raney's soft but very creative style on guitar is often overlooked compared to other players who got more press. This long-out-of-print LP features Raney leading three different groups. Valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer is the star soloist during a burning interpretation of Cole Porter's "So in Love" and the lovely ballad "Last Night When We Were Young." With pianist Hall Overton, bassist Red Mitchell, and drummer Osie Johnson, Raney's fluid solo in an easygoing take of "Indian Summer" is a high point. Another lineup includes tenor saxophonist Al Cohn, pianist Johnny Williams, bassist Whitey Mitchell (Red's brother), and drummer Jack Edie tackling a superb arrangement of Johnny Mandel's "Passport to Pimlico" and Bob Brookmeyer's snappy "Fanfare," in which the composer doesn't make an appearance. The high level of playing by everyone involved make this release something of value to any bop fan, but this record, if located at all, will command a premium price due to its rarity.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The album comes with its original, 'rice paper' inner sleeve (typically used in the 50’s and very early 60’s) which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years! We believe that, despite great technological progress, these early 'rice paper' inner sleeves provided a degree of protection MUCH HIGHER than any other material used ever since.

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A visible water staining affects about 10% of the back panel;; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
