Original STEREO pressings of Jimmy Reed's albums on Vee Jay (1960-1965) are some of the most coveted and prized possessions in the blues record-collecting. Because of his huge commercial success (Jimmy Reed had no peers among bluesmen of his generation) he was allowed a luxury of recording his peak-period albums in multi-track technology, and some of his albums were pressed in true stereo - although in minuscule numbers, probably less than 1000 each - even at a time when not even many white performers in a heavily segregated show business were given such generous treatment. What complicates things is that VeeJay was notoriously sloppy when keeping track of Reed's recordings, and nobody seems to be quite certain which ones of his albums exist in true stereo and which are to be found in mono only. This one - we guarantee - is a 100% genuine true stereo, first pressing of his 1962 Vee Jay album and is literally and figuratively rare an honest Democrat, impoverished Republican or independent Independent in Washington, DC. (good luck finding one) . This is a companion album to the second volume, released in 1963 ("Jimmy Reed sings More of the Best" a/k/a Boss of the Blues – please see our other auctions for the still sealed copy of this title). However, unlike the second volume released in 1963, on which Jimmy Reed covers some of HIS OWN greatest hits,  on this volume Jimmy Reed covers the songs of other blues greats, such as Big Joe Turner,  Leadbelly, Charles Brown and others).

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 30:1.

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed stereo sticker)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
