DESCRIPTION

Jimmy Smith - “Back At The Chicken Shack” Blue Note Records ST-84117 (Stereo) from 1963. Hard to Find Original 1963 Deep Groove U.S. First Stereo Pressing of this great Hard-Bop / Soul Jazz album from Organist Jimmy Smith and featuring backing from Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Burrell and Donald Bailey. Produced by Alfred Lion and Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder. On the Blue and White Blue Note Stereo labels with a New York USA address and in the Original Laminated Cover with the 43 West 61st St., New York 23 address and No Cutouts, Promo markings or Barcode. This is a First Pressing as indicated by the Matrix / Runout Vinyl markings read:
Matrix / Runout (Runouit Both Sides, Stamped): STEREO VAN GELDER [Plastylite “Ear” LOGO] Matrix / Runout (Runout Side A, Etched): BNST - 84117 · A Matrix / Runout (Runout Side B, Etched): BNST - 84117 - B
One sort of odd note, the A-side label is Deep Groove while the B-side has a regular pressing ring in the same spot.

CONDITION

The Sleeve is in nice shape. It has been kept in a loose Shrink Wrap / Sleeve that may or may not be original. There is some slight lamination peeling along the opening edge and corner softening/wear on the lower right corner. There is a 1/4” ding/tear in the center of the opening edge. Otherwise super solid with no splits, stains, writing, cutouts, etc. and would rate at least VG and aside from the ding is VG+ or better. The Vinyl is in clean Glossy condition. There are light scuffs, marks and hairlines including a couple that are pretty visible - no actual scratches i.e. something you can feel with a fingernail. VG visually but plays largely VG+ or better, with spots of light groove noise,  random soft tics and a few repeating soft tics near the start of side 1 and in the first half of side 2, song 2. Not for audiophiles but a good player and might be improved with a better cleaning than I can give with my Discwasher brush. The labels show some spindle trails and light wear but are at least VG to VG+.

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS

Records are graded to the best of my ability to Goldmine Visual standards. If I provide Play Grades it is done as a courtesy but I only guarantee the Visual Grade. If you are not familiar with this grading system (or even if you think you are!), please check it out before bidding. I have summarized the important (i.e. I think everyone knows what Mint means) points below in Goldmine's words:
Very Good Plus (VG+): Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK.
Very Good (VG): Surface noise will be evident upon playing,... Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.
I stand by my grades but would like us to be on the same page so no problems arise. I have been selling Vintage Vinyl for over twenty years on the net and I can count the returns I've had on one hand so I believe my grading is fair and accurate. One important note, I try to grade to these Goldmine guides as best as I can understand and apply them. This gives us both a written standard to go by rather than having to guess. But.... it also means that I don't issue refunds over differences of opinion in grading i.e. "That's not MY idea of a VG record!" - I don't know what your standards are and, as such, can't grade to them. I guarantee that items I sell will meet my description, nothing more or less! If you are not satisfied that a purchase meets my description, I will do what I can to make it right if you give me the chance and work with me! Please feel free to check my feedback.
