John Robert "Joe" Cocker OBE (born 20 May 1944) is an English rock/blues singer who came to popularity in the 1960s, and is most known for his gritty voice and his cover versions of popular songs, particularly those of The Beatles.

Early life

Cocker was born at 20 Tasker Road, Crookes, Sheffield, the youngest son of a civil servant. He left school early and became an apprentice gas fitter. In 1961, he started his musical career in the pubs of Sheffield.

Career

Under the stage name Vance Arnold, Cocker began his career with Vance Arnold and the Avengers. In 1963 the band supported The Rolling Stones at Sheffield City Hall. In 1964 Cocker released his first single, a cover of The Beatles' "I'll Cry Instead" with a new band, Joe Cocker Big Blues. This band ventured as far as France, where they played on American air bases. After a lull, Cocker teamed up with Chris Stainton, to form The Grease Band, in 1966. They were noticed by Denny Cordell, the producer of Procol Harum, The Moody Blues and Georgie Fame. Cordell set Cocker up with a residency at The Marquee Club in London.

After minor success in the U.S. with the single "Marjorine", he entered the big time with a groundbreaking rearrangement of "With a Little Help from My Friends," another Beatles cover, this time from the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, featuring lead guitar from Jimmy Page and backing vocals from Sue and Sunny.

The eventual original touring line up of Cocker's Grease band featured Henry McCullough on lead guitar who would go on to briefly play with McCartney's Wings.

In 1969 he appeared at the Woodstock Music Festival. His performance included the following songs:

Cocker then had a second UK hit with the Leon Russell song, "Delta Lady".

Throughout 1969 he was featured on variety TV shows like The Ed Sullivan Show and "This Is Tom Jones." Onstage, he exhibited an idiosyncratic physical intensity, flailing his arms and playing air guitar, occasionally giving superfluous cues to his band.

He had further success covering Beatles tunes in 1970 with his version of "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" from their Abbey Road album. Though his British success proved difficult to sustain, he enjoyed several chart entries in the U.S. with "Cry Me a River" and "Feelin' Alright" by Dave Mason. In 1970, his cover of the Box Tops' hit "The Letter", which appeared on the live album and film, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, became his first U.S. Top Ten hit. Cocker was backed in the film, soundtrack album and subsequent tour by a then unheard of band of more than 30 players (including three drummers, backing vocalist Rita Coolidge and pianist/bandleader Leon Russell).

In October 1972, Cocker toured Australia on his Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour. Cocker and six of his entourage were arrested in Adelaide by police for possession of marijuana. The next day in Melbourne, assault charges were laid after a brawl at the Commodore Chateau, and Cocker was given 48 hours to leave the country by the Australian Federal Police. This caused huge public outcry in Australia, as Cocker was a high-profile overseas artist and had a strong support base, especially amongst the baby boomers who were coming of age and able to vote for the first time. It sparked hefty debate about the use and legalisation of marijuana in Australia.

In late 1975, he contributed vocals on a number of the tracks on Bo Diddley's The 20th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll all-star album.

In 1976, Cocker performed "Feelin' Alright" on Saturday Night Live. John Belushi joined him on stage doing his famous impersonation of Cocker's stage movements.

In the beginning of the 1970s the "Sheffield Soul Shouter" dealt with drug abuse including alcohol. He managed to make a comeback in the 1980s and 1990s with several hits, including:

• "Up Where We Belong", (Grammy Award winning song written by Buffy Sainte-Marie and sung with Jennifer Warnes for the motion picture, An Officer and a Gentleman). This song hit #1 in October 1982
• "You Are So Beautiful"
• "You Can Leave Your Hat On," written by Randy Newman and featured on the 9 1/2 Weeks soundtrack
• "When The Night Comes" (1989, written by Bryan Adams)
• "Different Roads" written by Steve DuBerry
• "N'oubliez Jamais"
• "Unchain My Heart"
• "Feels Like Forever" from the movie, The Cutting Edge

From 1988 to 1993, "With A Little Help From My Friends" was used as the theme music to ABC TV's The Wonder Years.

Cocker performed the opening set at Woodstock '94 as one of the few alumni who played at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969, and was very well received. He continues to tour sporadically, and currently lives on the Mad Dog Ranch in Crawford, Colorado, with his wife, Pam. Cocker was awarded an OBE in the Queen's 2007 Birthday Honours list for services to music. To celebrate receiving his award in mid December 2007, Cocker played two concerts in London and in his home town of Sheffield.

In 2007, Cocker appeared playing minor characters in the film, Across the Universe, as the lead singer on another Beatles hit, "Come Together".

Nel 1959, Joe Cocker forma il suo primo gruppo, "I Cavaliers", suonando la batteria e l'armonica. Poi, nel 1961 inizia come vocalist cambiando il nome del gruppo in ”Vance Arnold & The Avengers". Joe Cocker è una pietra “dura”: una della poche star che ha retto dagli anni sessanta, ai giorni d'oggi. Il suo stile forte e la presenza scenica ed unica gli hanno permesso di essere uno dei cantanti piu dinamici nell'industria della musica.

Joe Robert Cocker, di Sheffield, classe '44 fcominciò a Sheffield, in Inghilterra a meta degli anni sessanta lavorando come benzinaio dedicando alla musica il suo tempo libero; Inizia a suonare come batterista a soli 14 anni nei Cavaliers e poi con la formazione Vance Arnold& The Evangers al ruolo di voce solista. Con un altro "Sheffieldiano", Chris Stainton, registrò "Marjorine" - avendo però poco successo. Poi arrivò" With a Little Help From My Friends ", prodotto da Denny Cordell della A&M Records. Questo album ospito star come Jimmy Page, Steve Winwood e Matthew Fischer. Decollo rapidamente. La traccia con il medesimo nome divenne una delle punte di massima luce alla Festa di Woodstock nel 1969, e supero notevolmente l'incisione originale dei Beatles. Poco dopo, registro l'album "Joe Cocker!", prodotto da Leon Russell e Denny Cordell.

L'album fu lodato universalmente dai critici per canzoni come "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" o "Delta Lady", “Darling Be Home Soon" e per l'allegra interpretazione di "Hitchcock Railway” Dopo due anni di tour continuo, Cocker era pronto per un'interruzione e andare a casa. Ci furono problemi relativi alla band, ma con l'aiuto di Leon Russell, fu formato un gruppo di musicisti per adempiere rapidamente alle date del tour premesse.

"Mad Dogs and Englishmen" Fu un album live, fu una tourne spettacolare, ed un film che rappresentava lo spirito goliardico con un'atmosfera da tendone da circo (spettacolare!!). Il loro viaggio tocco 39 citta in poco meno di 2 mesi. Dopo questo sforzo, Cocker si esauri fisicamente, ed emotivamente, ebbe guai giuridici e finanziari. Si ritrovo solo, viaggiando nel suo furgone tentando cosi di trovarsi di nuovo.

Gli anni che conseguirono, 1971 - 1974, furono accompagnati da alcool e abuso di medicinali. I suoi episodi di ubriachezza in pubblico erano ben noti come il suo talento, ed i manager delle industrie musicali scrissero “Cocker e fuori, come lavato" Gli album rilasciati durante questo periodo furono "Something to say", "I can stand a little rain", "Stingray", e "Jamaica say you will". Nessuno di essi era artisticamente grande, non furono nemmeno considerati vicini ai successi commerciali delle sue interpretazioni precedenti. Ci furono in ogni caso delle canzoni che divennero successi, "High time we went", "Fun Time", "Put out the light" e "You are so beautifull". Ci fu poi un periodo approssimativamente di quattro anni dove lui non registro nulla; continuo invece a viaggiare e a rimediare ai suoi errori.

Nel 1978 Cocker si risveglia e firma un contratto con la A&M Records un album per l'Asylum Records e la sua carriera ancora una volta era in salita. "A Luxury You Can Afford" ha avuto piccoli grandi successi - "Watch the River Flow", "Fun Time", ed una cover meravigliosa "Heard It Through the Grapevine", segue una lunga tourne con l'ennesimo gruppo di supporto, i bostoniani "American Strand band" . Nell'album seguente " Sheffield Steel ", Cocker si mise in mostra in modo migliore. L'album e preciso, registrato con un aspetto migliore. Le tracce da notare di piu sono: "Many Rivers to Cross", "Seven days", "Sweet little woman" e "Just like always". Poco piu tardi rilascia "Civilized Man", dove si sente la vera rinascita con brani come: “Even a Fool Would Let Go” e la stessa “ Civilized Man”. Dopo solo 2 anni rilascia un album anzi, l'album d'eccellenza negli anni 80, “Cocker” con all'interno tracce indimenticabili come: “Shelter Me”, “Don't You Love Me Anymore”, “Inner City Blues” e la famosissima “You can leave your hat on” usata in molteplici commedie (9 Settimane e mezzo) e spogliarelli privati. Dopo un solo anno, nel 1987 esce “Unchain My Heart”: un album pieno di vita, di colore e dell'espressivita di Joe Cocker. Con canzoni come “Unchain My Heart”, “Two Wrong” e “All Our Tomorrows” non sbaglia nemmeno questa volta. Nel 1989 esce il terzo album della rinascita vera e propria di Joe, “When The Night Comes ” con all'interno grandissimi successi come la stessa “When the night comes”, con Brian Adams alla chitarra, “One night of sin”, cover della famosa canzone di Elvis, e altra famosissima cover “Fever”. Per promuovere l'album organizza un lunghissimo tour accompagnato dal glorioso Stainton che sarà anche nel successivo album in studio. <>
"COCKER LIVE " e il primo live ufficiale con all'interno 13 brani live e due inediti di cui in seguito usciranno i singoli. Nel 1992 esce “ NIGHT CALLS ” ultimo “spettacolare” disco secondo la gente.
Questo album rappresenta la fine di una carriera stupenda anche se Joe Cocker ha continuato ad incidere fino ad oggi. All'interno troviamo brani stupendi come: “ I Can Hear The River ” “ Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me ” cover di Elthon John, “ Love Is Alive ” “ Out Of The Rain ” e altri magnifici brani. La particolarita di questo disco, e che ne sono uscite due versioni con tracce aggiunte. Dopo due anni, esce “ HAVE A LITTLE FAITH IN ME ” disco di intensita molto forte, anche se si sente che il “leone di Sheffield sta diventando grande, e la grinta comincia ad essere minore. In questo disco ci sono moltissimi brani forti come “ Summer in the city ”, di intensita e molte ballate tra cui: “ Have A Little Faith In Me ” “ Let The Healing Begin ” e la bellissima “ Take Me Home ” usata in un film. Questi ultimi dischi gli hanno fatto meritare quattro nominations al Grammy consecutive per migliore interpretazione maschile “vocale”.

Nel 1995, dagli archivi della A&M fu rilasciato un box " Long Voyage Home ", un cofanetto di quattro cd con materiale mai rilasciato prima, che include la massima popolarita di Joe. Di seguito fu rilasciato “ ORGANIC ” album di successi rivisitati dallo stesso Joe in chiave acustica. All'interno alcuni brani non suoi come “ Into The Mystic ” “ Sail Away ” “ Dignity ” e molti suoi successi. Da molti discusso questo disco perche inutile, ma sara vero? Nel 1997 esce “ ACROSS FROM MIDNIGHT ” disco molto pop, con poche sfumature “Cockeriane”.
All'interno si trovano le famose cover: “ Could you be loved ” di Bob Marley, “ Need your love so bad ” e la famosissima “ N'oubliez Jamais ”. A 54 anni, fa uscire un disco che puo essere considerato il degno successore del precedente, un disco pop, oramai commercializzato, ma interpretato da Joe, quindi migliore. I brani di grande rilievo sono: “ First We Take Manhattan ” cover di Leonard Choen, “ Different Roads ” “ No Ordinary World ” che da il nome al disco.
Nel 2002 esce con un disco, che torna a dire che l'amore e tutto. “RESPECT YOURSELF” è il suo nome, comprende brani di grande intensita, semplici, ma umani, veri. La voce del “vecchio leone” non e la stessa ma la grinta si, e si sente. Alcuni brani vengono cantati anche in trasmissioni italiane, dopo che sembrava si fossero scordati di lui, come: “ You Can't Have My Heart ” “ Every Time It Rains ” e “ Never Tear Us Apart ” cover di un famosissimo gruppo internazionale.

Il penultimo album uscito nel 2004. “ HEART & SOUL ” Con questa prova, l'artista ha voluto testare una esperienza nuova. Un album interamente composto da cover. (Marvin Gayn – U2 – Aretha Franklin – Nina Simone & molti altri) Un grande successo in tutto il mondo, anche se in Italia, la gente ha perso la voglia di assistere ai suoi concerti, non ha smesso di comprare i suoi dischi. Voglio ricordare che a 60 compiuti Joe Cocker, riesce ancora ad esprimere la sua “rabbia”, certo la voce è minore confronto a quella degli anni 80 ma la grandezza di un artista, si misura anche nelle prove e nelle esperienze passate per essere ancora oggi, vivo e ricordato, come una leggenda musicale del rock.

Ecco l'ultimo album "Hymn for my soul" 2007 Un disco, intenso... è vero, non urla in questo disco.. ma la sua anima soul esce, e si propaga in tutte le direzioni, un album che non vuole essere una forza, ma ben si una conferma.. come un uomo, JOE COCKER, possa ancora sfornare dischi dove può cimentarsi in brani cover e nuovi successi. (il tuor che lo segue, e che lo sta portando in tutto il mondo è un enorme successo!!)
