THE AUDIO HAS GOT TO BE HEARD TO BE BELIEVED, I WOULD PERSONALLY RATE THE AUDIO AS MINT ON MY SYSTEMS, I BARELY HEARD EVEN A STATIC CRACKLE. THIS ALBUM IS A 'MUST HAVE' IN ANY MODERN PROGRESSIVE JAZZ COLLECTION, STUNNING PERFORMANCES ESPECIALLY FROM HARRIOTT ON ALTO SAX, DIWAN MOTHIHAR ON SITAR.

I have been a collector of vinyl for more than 30 years, with a collection of over 2,000 albums, the time has come to part with some of the collection. Joseph Arthurlin 'Joe' Harriott (born July 15, 1928 in Kingston, Jamaica- died January 2, 1973 in Southampton, Hampshire, England) was a Jamaican jazz musician and composer, whose principal instrument was the alto saxophone.

Initially a bebopper, he is now widely acknowledged as one of the worldwide pioneers of free jazz. He was educated at Kingston's famed Alpha Boys School, which produced a number of prominent Jamaican musicians. He moved to the UK as a working musician in 1951 and lived in the country for the rest of his life. Harriott was part of a wave of Caribbean jazz musicians who arrived in Britain during the 1950s, including Dizzy Reece, Harold McNair, Harry Beckett and Wilton Gaynair.

Harriott having relocated to Britain in 1951, initially played the bebop music that was popular at the time. While recovering from tubercolosis in 1958, Harriott invented free jazz independently from Ornette Coleman, although he used a piano-based quintet (sax, trumpet, piano, drums, bass). They recorded Free Form (november 1960) and Abstract (november 1961), the manifestos of British free-jazz, and an even more radical experiment, Movement (1963). The quintet rapidly changed course and ended its career with the conventional High Spirits (september 1964), a jazz interpretation of a mediocre musical, that almost sounded like a repudiation of Harriott's masterpieces.

In 1965 Harriott met Indian violinist John Mayer, who, after relocating to Britain in 1952, had already composed Raga Music (1952) for solo clarinet, a Violin Sonata (1955), the suite Dances of India (1958) for sitar, flute, tabla, tambura and orchestra, and a Shanta Quintet (1966) for sitar and strings. The two musicians hit it off immediately (and Harriott was a difficult man to get on with) formed the mixed-race ensemble Indo-Jazz Fusions, this involved a ‘double quintet’ of five Indian and five jazz musicians. Within a month Mayer had finished writing the music for the first Indo-Jazz fusion LP. Harriott thus pioneered the fusion with Indian music culminating with Indo-Jazz Fusions (September 1966) and the Indo-Jazz Suite (October 1966), two albums (mostly composed by Mayer) recorded by a double quintet: Harriott's jazz quintet and an Indian quintet led by Mayer plus Diwan Motihar on sitar, flute, tambura and tabla. He pursued this idea on Hum-Dono (1969), featuring Indian guitarist Amancio D'Silva, trumpeter Ian Carr and vocalist Norma Winstone.

Harriott died of cancer in January 1973.

 ALBUM DESCRIPTION

The Indo-Jazz suite was one of the albums recorded with the collaboration between Alto Sax player Harriot and the Indian born Violinist and composer John Mayer. On the album five Jazz musicians and four Indian musicians with a concert flautist combine to fuse the adventurous jazz music of the West with that of cultural Indian music from the East. All of the music was composed by Mayer and on three of the pieces are based on the Indian raga- an Indian scale using varying ascending and descending notes in a set sequence. At the time of composing and recording the achievement was ground breaking in the world of jazz.

THE AUDIO

I can only describe the audio as stunning crystal clear and vibrant with great Mono reproduction, no distortion whatsoever. It plays through with no skips, jumps, pops or clicks, it sounds perfect in my opinion. (Obviously with an album of this age an odd bit of static has to be allowed for, but I barely heard any at all!) I would rate the audio conservatively as Nr Mint.

THE VINYL

On visual inspection the vinyl really looks mint, lays perfectly flat on the turntable with no sounding marks needle marks or scratches, not a hint of groovewear, I imagine this copy of the album has only ever been played a handful of times. Only under a strong angled light can any wispy sleeve removal type marks be seen, hence in my opinion I would grade the vinyl as Nr Mint. 

THE LABELS 

The Black & Blue Columbia KT stamped labels look superb, clean with no marks or writing with very little spidering at all. The spindle holes are perfectly round with no signs of wear at all, exceptionally rare to find in a over 43 year old record like this. I would grade the labels as Nr Mint.

THE COVER 

The front laminated Garrod & Lofthouse cover is in fantastic condition, super glossy with virtually no signs of wear, only when angled to light can I see a couple of tiny laminate creases, barely any wear to the front at all. The rear is very clean with a minimal amount of wear The spine which has virtually no wear at all, square and straight with all the wording perfectly clear. Overall I would rate the cover as Nr Mint.

THIS ALBUM WILL BE SENT IN A LARGE BOX WITH CARDBOARD STIFFENERS THE VINYL AND COVER WILL BE INSERTED SEPARATLY IN POLY SLEEVES AND WRAPPED WITH PLENTY OF BUBBLEWRAP FOR ADDED PROTECTION.
