WILD KITTEN (1957)
Guitarist Joe Puma is one of those jazz musicians who, with relatively little fanfare, has played well for quite a while. When mentioned to the jazz coterie, the name brings a quiet nod of affirmation reserved for those that have something valid to say in jazz.
In the beginning, playing the guitar was merely a hobby for Joe, a rather predominant hobby for men of the Puma family. However, Joe's interest for the guitar became rapidly more defined than his father and two brothers, and though holding a day-job, (1944-47) he soon was spending as much time playing at night, as he did working by day.
In 1951, he got his first 'name job' with the Cy Coleman Trio, and a variety of musical employment has followed, much of it in jazz, his first love. The credit listing includes the Les Elgart and Louis Bellson bands, the Don Elliot Quartet, Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five and accompanying stints with vocalists Peggy Lee and Felicia Sanders.
The chief medium of experience for the budding jazz player of ten years ago was the jam session. Going to jam sessions was like going to school", commented Puma in our get-together, "The older musicians had very little patience with young, busy-sounding upstarts. I quickly found that it wasn't how much you played, but the way you played in relation to the tune and the other players that counted. If the more experienced musicians who ran the sessions became displeased with you, they'd immediately find a replacement or just walk off the stand. Learning the 'right way' could be quite a bitter experience. However, no matter how bad it went when you were goofing, the final acceptance was like getting diploma.”
When asked about this album, Joe pointed out, "We tried for simplicity and togetherness; the two things' that have always given small group jazz meaning for me. This, along with stress on the fullest interpretation of the melodic and rhythmic values of each tune, which, when sensitively , treated, reveal the full story and feeling within that tune.
"In selecting the men to play on this album, I kept in mind what I wanted the album to be like, and used that as a yardstick for selection. My two playing partners of long standing, accordianist Mat Mathews and bassist Oscar Pettiford, were automatic choices. Whitey Mitchell, who I have been playing with lately, and certainly one of the finest of the younger bass players, splits bass chores with Oscar.
For a change of rhythmic sound and feel, old reliable ex-Basie-ite, Shadow Wilson is on drums on Rose Room and But Not For Me . . . Basically a trio album, it certainly was a challenge to the musicians taking part."
