So, the year is 1965: Joe Tex is finally starting to hit the big time, and all the labels he used to record for suddenly remember that they let a future star get away. Chess/Checker rushed this one out pretty quickly, as you can tell from the title (to capitalize on his big Atlantic hit “Hold on to what you got”). They even had the cheek to add a subtitle to "Baby You're Right" ("I'm Gonna Keep What I Got") just so Joe's new fans thought this was the follow-up. Hey, even this early he liked to "answer" his own records, so who'd know the difference, right? Even though this material was slightly old, it wasn't musty. Unlike most of his records, this sounds like it was cut with his road band rather than in the studio with seasoned session musicians. He'd already started using spoken-word sermonettes on his records, but he doesn't quite sound comfortable with it yet - he's overacting like he's trying out for the school play. But as far as general songwriting, he's on top of it. The shadow of James Brown appears twice - "Baby You're Right" (written by Joe) was recorded by James, and "You Keep Her" is the shoutout to JB after he supposedly "stole" Joe's wife. "Sit Yourself Down" has a funky New Orleans syncopation; "Ain't I A Mess" is a bit of showbiz autobiography; and "I'll Never Break Your Heart" is a direct response to Jerry Butler's "He Will Break Your Heart." Classic stuff, even if the Chess brothers seriously expected listeners to think this was a new album.

Another interesting fact about this album is that it is for all practical purposes a Motown album (see the publishing company’s name Ro-Gor Music which the Gor is Berry GORdy). These tracks were recorded for Berry's early Motown label, Anna Records which was distributed by Chess Records. When Berry set up Motown officially, Tex did not go with Motown, and his unfinished album was never released, staying in the Chess vaults until the rush-release on Checker to capitalize on Joe's later Dial Records success via Atlantic Records. The immortal All I Could Do Was Cry includes the infamous monologue that was redone later by Tina Turner while the full song was a bigger hit for then labelmate Etta James on Chess Records' Argo label.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the top seam.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
