FLIP FLOP AND FLY
There's a few things you notice about Joe Turner right off; 1) the man never needed a microphone. He sang so loud he could be heard miles away. 2) the band was big, boy was he BIG!
This is a great example of the greatness of Joe Turner. By the time he signed to Atlantic, he had already had a few top ten R&B hits with other labels. But his days with Atlantic were his glory years. Beginning in 1951 with 'Chain of Love' and running through 1956 and 'Corinna, Corinna' he put 13 songs in a row in the R&B top 10. He was a powerhouse.
This is a cool tune called 'Flip, Flop And Fly' that was the #2 R&B song in the nation in March of 1955. It never dented the pop charts at the time but what did those bobby soxers know about good music back in '55 anyway?
It was super blues shout with a sloppy trombone and is flipped with 'Ti-Ri-Lee." This is an original yellow-label pressing of that remarkable 45
