Joe Walsh

'Barnstorm', Probe,UK, 1972

SPBA 6268

AS ONE of the greatest guitar technicians of all time Joe Walsh emerged from the early seventies as a consummate composer and player issuing a string of highly regarded albums (both with the James Gang and solo) and carving out a unique niche. Of course, his recruitment by the Eagles put an end to his solo ambitions but not before crafting some truly stellar records including this album. Not as aurally crushing as you might from a man who had just stepped out of the power trio James Gang but more of a celebratory statement of his freedom to play in just about any style he wishes. The material ranges from solid hard rock ala 'Turn To Stone' through to dreamy acoustic tracks where Walsh is content to add just the lightest flourishes to the melodies.

Perhaps the best thing about this record is his ability to craft songs that showcased a number of complementary styles. In a way I used to think his records were more like the progressive rock of Pink Floyd than the rhino charged hard rock energy of Montrose. He was a master at painting little vignettes; short interconnecting tracks that  surrounded and reinforced blockbusters.

Backed by a three piece band and produced by Bill Szymczyk (who would later go on to work with the Eagles on 'Hotel California') this album is about as good as it gets for quality rock and golden songs.

Highly recommended.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
