SIR JOHN BARBIROLLI Mahler: Symphony No.9 (HMV ALP 2047/ALPS 2048) UK 1st Pressing MINT!
RARE original UK MONO first pressing of Sir John Barbirolli`s famed interpretation of Gustav Mahler`s Symphony No.9, released on His Master`s Voice/EMI Records (1964).
A two-record set with three playable sides and a fourth, empty side adorned only by the HMV logo, this is the MONO version.
"In 1963 Barbirolli conducted the Berlin Philharmonic at home in a performance of this symphony that so moved members of the orchestra (which supposedly at that point was not particularly Mahler-friendly) that it requested a recording, even though the Berlin Philharmonic was signed to DGG. In fact the orchestra members were unanimous in requesting the recording and as subsequent live performances demonstrated, so was the German public.
A deal was struck and a year after the original performance the orchestra was permitted to record this symphony with Barbirolli with EMI engineers at the board (or desk as they call it in the UK). The resulting sonics are unlike anything heard from DGG back then. (...) The sound is rich, transparent and everything it's claimed to be by those extolling its sonic and musical virtues. GRADING:
MINT- COVERS in near-perfect condition. Please see photos for details.
- Original front-laminated UK sleeves with tri-fold backflaps.
- The first sleeve has discolouring on the rear, while the second sleeve has a minor corner band (at top right) and a slightly scuffed corner (at bottom right).
- Other than that, both covers are in practically perfect condition.
- Includes both polylined, custom-printed EMI Records inner sleeves in fine EX+ condition.
MINT(-) RECORDS that both look unplayed. A near-impossible find in this condition!
- Perfect vinyl on both sides, with impeccable audio reproduction throughout.
- No hairlines, scuffs or any other visible signs of previous play at all.
- First-pressing His Master`s Voice labels ("Sold in U.K. subject to retail price conditions") with no spindle wear whatsoever.
- The matrix stamps in the run-off grooves read "2XRA 9020 - 1S", "2XRA 9021 - 2S", as well as "2XRA 9022 - 1S".
- This two-record set is certified to be a UK MONO first pressing of Sir John Barbirolli`s interpretation of Gustav Mahler`s Symphony No.9, released in 1964.
