I will never compromise on quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and trackable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Please do NOT ask me to make any exceptions to this rule as no country offers 100% reliable service without it.

Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take longer from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

Label/Format: Island – Original Pink format with i logo and small witch logo. These have the lovely true pink colour and quite smooth matt finish.

Label Conditions: Clean, fresh and attractive examples that show only one or two faint spindle traces. Another one owner from new copy who put his records to tape, this looks hardly played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Getting quite rare, I consider this to be one of the more elusive original Pink Island albums and even less easy to find in such fine condition.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The first of two albums by Scottish singer John Martyn made with his wife Beverley (Kutner, from Coventry), following two previous solo Island albums. A great guitarist with a distinctive style, bought more to the fore on later releases. This album was recorded in Woodstock in the United States and it included some fine American musicians including ex-Mothers of Invention drummer Billy Mundi. A quite a laid-back, all peace and love affair – but totally captivating and a great listen. Beverley played with a jug band before meeting John and provides a lovely contrast in style to a quality album. Not a big seller, hence elusive and never easy to find this vintage record this clean and hardly played. The wear-prone cover, made with thin card is also impressive, although not perfect, it is still one of the best I have seen.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes the Philips style polylined, 1970 date-coded inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Even with some fairly small rubbing to the corner tips, still a lovely front, and seldom seen without often considerable wear and especially ugly ring wear which this has largely avoided. The odd minor mark but hardly any creasing, still clean and fresh. This dark cover is made with thin card and few survive worthy of a second look. Along with the lack of ring wear, the lack of sticker issues is another major plus on this intolerant surface.

Cover Back: Overall, similar again, but this side lacking the tip wear. Again, any surface marks minimal, fine and faint, also hardly creased again. The only rub of any note, a gentle rim arc near the left edge. I have never seen this cover with less hint of ring wear.

Top Edge: Solid and straight with rubbing to each corner end which is only small and light.

Bottom Edge: Similar again with even less tip wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with minimal traces of thickening. The record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid and straight with minimal wear or compression. The text fully present and appearing pink, the graphic that flows around has not faded and hardly rubbed, not sure if the text has faded as this colour often tends to. The text is still easily read either way.

Corners: Light to moderate corner rubs with a tiny tip crease to the top right. Fine to very fine shape retained, the only possible dink on the top right, but only light.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover in mostly very fine condition. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a Philips-style lined inner (the record pressed by that company for Island) that has only gently aged. The polylining still quite clear with minimal crinkle as seen through two neat undamaged window circles. Hardly creased and all edges naturally intact. This has the important date-code of 1/0370 (March 1970) confirms this was manufactured virtually the same time as the album’s release.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a highly attractive visual copy and appears hardly played. Very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed by Philips and including all ‘1’ stampers – something that is rarely ever seen. Even with scrutiny under bright light, there is hardly a user mark or blemish worthy of mention. Even lacking wispy hairlines or surface traces and certainly no stylus scratches. Visually an amazing copy to please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful Philips-pressed Island original plays up to, and beyond its high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with very clean and detailed sound with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Any surface sounds are minimal – a fairly challenging record with some quiet passages, so the odd contact trace is nigh-on impossible to avoid on revealing equipment. Possibly one of the lesser-lauded early pink Island albums, but it should be, this is a beautiful album in the same style as the later Richard and Linda Thompson classic ‘I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight’ – another poor selling gem. Anyone who regards that as highly as me will love this album as well. This very early issue will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits strong recommendation. This will rarely be found much better.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
