Label/Format: Island – Original Pink format with i logo and small witch logo. These have the slightly paler pink colour and smooth matt finish

Label Conditions: Clean, fresh and attractive examples that show only a very few and light spindle marks that show little. Although the very wear-prone cover has some wear, the record itself is superb and appears very lightly played.

Cat Number: ILPS 9113.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 125 grams. Around average.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Getting quite rare, I consider this to be one of the more elusive original Pink Island albums. This the first one I have offered for several years.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The first of two albums Martyn (a Scot) made with his wife Beverley (Kutner, from Coventry) following two previous solo Island albums. The second The Tumbler was a mixture of folk with jazzy elements. A great guitarist with a distinctive style, bought more to the fore on later releases. This album was recorded in Woodstock, USA, it included some fine American musicians, a quite a laid-back, all peace and love affair – but totally captivating and a great listen. Beverley played with a jug band before meeting John and provides a lovely contrast in style to a quality album. As stated above, the cover has some wear, mainly on the unforgiving edges, but all surfaces are prone. The record itself is very impressive and looks great and sounds the same. Not a big seller, hence elusive and never easy to find this this vintage record this clean.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a single unlaminated format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: Such a shame Island did not laminate more of their covers, the vast majority were matt and vulnerable, and this is no exception. This one is up there with the most difficult on this label and few are seen without significant rubbing and ring wear. In context, any here is only modest and overall, quite light as seen near the edges, mostly near the bottom. Very few creases and any marks quite light and few too. A quite attractive and difficult front overall.

Cover Back: The back is better still and has a terrific early portrait of the pair. Less evidence of rubbing and barely any hint of ring wear. A very fine vertical surface crease near the spine edge also shows little. This back is certainly one of the better ones I have seen.

Top Edge: Only very light, slightly patchy rubbing and still straight.

Bottom Edge: Light to moderate rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with a little thickening seen on the back towards the centre, this viewed end-on. The record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: The spine has some wear: rubbing to the ends and a half inch rub about a quarter of the way down that has eroded the ‘JO’ in JOHN – the rest of the text is largely present with minimal traces of wear. Still solid and quite straight with some patchy compression. So the spine has faired less well than the rest of cover, this being the minus on my grading.

Corners: Moderate corner rubs with fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very respectable example of a difficult cover. With wear on the main areas, being the front and back, only quite light, this remains a quite attractive example. So not for the more discerning, but it will never prove easy to find a great deal better. It will please many collectors, but not all.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a polydor-style lined inner that has aged little. The polylining clear with crinkle as seen through two pristine window circles. Some corner creasing but clean and still quite fresh. All edges are unsplit with no repairs. This has the important date-code of 1/0370, within a few days of issue.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) / EXCELLENT(++): a highly attractive visual copy and appears very little played. Very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A few very light surface hairline type marks seen under bright angled light on side one, hardly any on two – there are no penetrating scratches on this age-defying record. Visually one to please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely Island original plays up to its high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a mostly clean and detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, but light surface traces just noted near the end – this being quite critical of a fairly challenging record with some quiet passages. Also played on very sensitive equipment, anything is ultimately brief and very gentle indeed and few will better this for looks or sound. The cover may have some wear, but the record is very impressive for looks and most-all for sound too and barely anything spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this almost ‘lost’ Island folk gem. This record will prove difficult to find better and could indeed be a significant upgrade for many, strong recommendation is justified.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
