Fear is the first album in John Cale's Island trilogy, consisting of the brilliant two records Slow Dazzle and Helen of Troy, but Fear is arguably the best of them. The great vocals, the dark lyrics, the threatening aura and the nevertheless catchy tunes are perfectly aligned on Fear, and it's also darker than his earlier albums.
The album starts with Fear is a Man's Best Friend which defines the mood for this record, anxious, surreal and experimental. The album is full of great experimental parts, like the ending of the catchy Barracuda or the 8-minute long Gun which is mercilessly rolling forward with great guitar work.
None of John Cale's 70s albums sound the same, they're all intriguing and showcase different abilities of John Cale who is also one of the best producers of this time. Fear is an atmospheric and sometimes hypnotic record that takes a step forward from the outstanding Paris 1919 and creates a sound that should define John Cale's music for a few years.
