When Velvets and John Cale parted ways in late 1968, John Cale got involved in some fairly interesting projects: Nico's second and third studio albums, Stooges first album, plus The Modern Lovers legendary, long-delayed first album, etc.. Ultimately, he settled down at Warner/Reprise as label's in-house arranger and producer. The first solo work he did in this capacity was this wonderful 1973 poetic masterpiece. Veering off the beaten track (you would not expect anything else from John Cale, would you?) he recorded this gorgeous combination of dadaist poetry, gentle countryside images of Cale's native Wales, surreal changes in pace and rhythm, delicate, almost mournful orchestration and some intimate, expressive, whisper-like vocalizing. But there are some interesting stick-out-like-a-sore-thumb elements here, like the almost heavy-metal guitar assault of George Lowell on 'Macbeth' and a few other tracks. This album shows the poetic, folksy side of John Cale - everything and anything that we never could hear in his work with the Velvets, but also shows the constantly unpredictable, quirky and occasionally bizarre side of his aesthetics. Incredible listening experience - and a much, much better sound than the lousy compact disc version. Track listing: Child's Christmas In Wales --- Hanky Panky Nohow --- Endless Plain Of Fortune, The --- Andalucia --- Macbeth --- Paris 1919 --- Graham Greene --- Half Past France --- Antarctica Starts Here
For its extraordinary contribution to the contemporary music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, songwriters and general public, or for some other inherent quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, show business professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, the legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice , Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton, Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). · CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The album comes with the REPLICA of the promo-only insert still intact.
(c) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(d) The record is apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type), vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl either.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
