The JOHN CARTER OCTET
Dauwhe(LP)
Black Saint
Cat: BSR 0057. Rel: 20 Jan 20
Jazz
Side 1 - Track 1. Dauwhe Side 1 - Track 2. Ode To The Flower Maiden Side 2 - Track 1. Enter From The East Side 2 - Track 2. Soft Dance Side 2 - Track 3. The Mating Ritual
First released back in 1982, "Dauwhe" is the sole album by the John Carter Octet - a free-jazz ensemble helmed by clarinetist John Carter. The set was recorded in Los Angeles over three days, with the resulting tracks finding their way onto an album that was released not in the United States, but Italy. It remains an intriguing set, with Carter and company flitting between manic, up-tempo workouts (wild, 12-minute opener "Dauwhe"), sparse and minimalist jazz laments ("Ode To The Flower Maiden"), spaced-out soundscapes ("Enter From The East"), bustling numbers ("Soft Dance") and ambient-jazz epics ("The Mating Ritual").
