MUSIC: This is a seminal album in the history and development of Jazz. John Coltrane makes the transition from hard bop to spiritual jazz—music making in the jazz idiom as worship of God. This is a result of John's spiritual awakening at the time. There is a powerful spiritual statement written by him inside the gatefold and a devotional poem-like writing below it.
CONDITION:
VINYL: (Play-graded in part! see those notes in the listing below) Strong VG, my chart below; under diffused light, vinyl is smooth with long hairlines and streaks; under direct bright light, there are many wear and sleeve marks, streaks and hairlines, but only few short and tiny ones are slightly feelable but won't stop the nail.
- Note: This copy sounds beautifully with strong and full fidelity, depth and accuracy; light occasional crackle; at the beginning of side 2 there is some more crackle (more noticeable in quieter parts like the bass solo on track 2 side 2; there are a number of clicks over a short slightly feelable scratch, but it's during the opening powerful drum solo, so it is not much of an issue. I heard two clicks during the first 2 minutes of side 1. Overall, the music and fidelity are very strong and powerful and drown out any crackle or clicks. The playback may improve with deep cleaning and using a spherical stylus.
LABELS: Nice, clean, with some light factory bubbling on both sides.
COVER: Moderate VG+. Gatefold, no splits. Bright colors and graphics. Clean inside the fold; some partial clear tape applied on some of the inside periphery (unknown why). The reverse shows two slivers of fading along the left and top left.
MATRIX NUMBERS: Side A: AS-77 A; Side B: AS-77 B. (see photos)
IDENTIFIERS: 'STEREO' and 'VAN GELDER" stamped on both sides. (see photos)
