Jazz aficionados are known for their inability to agree on anything, and their ability to agree on nothing (and with gusto!). These loveable folks have a great talent for skillfully avoiding consensus wherever possible. Hence, loathed harmony; wither, detested accord !!!
Well, now that this has been reaffirmed, we have here one album where consensus is not only possible - it is unavoidable. We feel we speak for everyone when we say that this is one of top-5 finest Jazz recordings in the history of modern Jazz. It is right up there with the works of Miles Davis, John Coltrane himself, Cannonball Adderley, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. The interplay of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and others on this beauty will leave listener begging and pleading for more after the album is over; and the combination of renaissance tunes given African-American treatment, mesmerizing blues themes, resonant, textured, polyrhythmic African chants, and a seamless, free-flow improvisation is simply mind-blowing. Incredible musicianship is a whole different story altogether - but if you don't know this by now, we won't educate you; you have to find out for yourself.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Minor yellowing is noted on the INSIDE gatefold
- Inside gatefold has some circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage.
- Cover has a light tape residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed piece of scotch tape)
- Back cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker, delicately masked (camouflaged) with a like-colored (black) marker (about 1 square inch in size).
- Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)
- The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side (nothing significant)
- Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
- No ring wear
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No wrinkles or creases
- No writing
- No stamps
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No glue traces or wax residue.
- No bar codes
- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
