JOHN COLTRANE: "ASCENTION" LP [EDITION I]
CATALOG# A-95
ORIGINAL 1965 MONO PRESSING. Only the "Van Gelder" stamper on run-out grooves.
CONDITION: Cover VG+ / Record G
Laminated gatefold cover has light rub wear, no splits. Nice shape for being over 50 years old.
The record has light scratches and scuffs and noticeable dishwarp. I played it on my Audio Technica AT-LP 120 turntable and it played through alright but only after I made significant tonearm adjustments. Even after doing this, though, the tonearm moved a lot as the record played. It does not skip and has minimal surface noise throughout but because of the aforementioned issues, I would have to play grade the record as "good." Bottom line is: THIS IS NOT A MINT COPY OF THE VINYL BY ANY MEANS. IT IS, HOWEVER, AN ORIGINAL 'EDITION I' PRESSING OF THE ALBUM, WHICH IS QUITE RARE AND COLLECTIBLE.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coltrane's Ascension was originally released with the second take of the music from the Van Gelder Studios recording session on June 28, 1965. These original pressings are commonly referred to as 'Edition I.'
Shortly thereafter, Coltrane expressed a desire to instead use the first take. So Impulse swapped out the stampers for ones with the first take and inscribed 'Edition II' in the dead wax, ceasing production of the original version.
So, if you have an orange/black labelled pressing of Ascension from the mid-to-late 1960s, the presence or absence of 'Edition II' in the dead wax is the simplest way to determine which version you have.
The solo order differs slightly between the takes; Edition I features the drum solo by Elvin Jones, Edition II does not.
