I play each used record (unless noted) and grade according to Goldmine Standards:
(my additions are in italics)
SS: Still Sealed—in factory-fresh condition.
M: Mint—perfect, factory-fresh but opened.
M- (or NM): Mint Minus or Near Mint—a near perfect record. M- records are shiny, with no visible defects.
Writing, stickers, spindle marks, or other markings cannot appear on the label.
M- jackets have no creases, ring wear or seam splits of any kind.
VG+ (or EX): Very Good Plus or Excellent—only superficial signs of use that don’t affect play.
May show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs/very light scratches that do not affect listening.
(Could have some light surface noise in quiet passages).
VG+ jackets may have very light ring wear or discoloration, barely noticeable.
May have some very minor seam wear or a split (2” long or less). Could have cut-out or similar markings.
VG: Very Good—a used, reasonable copy. Can have light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail.
Has surface noise which doesn’t overpower the music. Some scratches may be audible.
Label can have minor writing, tape or sticker.
VG jackets have obvious ring wear, but not overwhelming; more creases visible.
Seam splitting more obvious; it may appear on all three sides, though it won’t be obvious upon looking.
Someone might have written on it or stamped a price tag on it.
VG-: Very Good Minus—significant wear and marks and usually quite noticeable surface noise.
G+: Good Plus—In the record world, “Good” is not good!
From here on down (Fair, Poor), we’re talking about beat-up records.
