·       JOHN COLTRANE with WILBUR HARDEN, CURTIS FULLER, TOMMY FLANAGAN, ALI JACKSON AND ART TAYLOR – JAZZ WAY OUT – ORIGINAL 1958 SAVOY RECORDS MONO LP MG-12131

·       ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

·       NOTE: WHILE MOST DISCOGRAPHIES LIST THIS ALBUM UNDER WILBUR HARDEN’S NAME, THE COVER MAKES IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT THIS IS A COLLABORATIVE (JAM SESSION-TYPE) EFFORT, AND ALL PARTICIPANTS IN THE SESSION – JOHN COLTRANE INCLUDED – RECEIVE EQUAL CO-BILLING ON THE COVER (BUT NOT ON THE RECORD LABELS). HARDEN APPEARS TO BE ONLY THE “FIRST AMONG EQUALS” BECAUSE HIS NAME IS LISTED FIRST. LINER NOTES DO NOT SINGLE OUT HARDEN AS A GROUP LEADER OR A LEAD SOLOIST.

·       AN INTERESTING TRIVIA DETAIL: THE STEREO VERSION OF THIS ALBUM (WE HAVE A MONO HERE!) IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN THE FIRST JOHN COLTRANE SESSION TO BE RELEASED IN TRUE STEREO

·       ORIGINAL 'BLOOD RED' SAVOY LABEL WITH SILVER PRINT AND DEEP GROOVE ON THE LABEL (NOTE: UNLIKE THE SECOND PRESSING OF THIS ALBUM (CIRCA 1963, ON MAROON LABEL), THE FIRST PRESSING OF THIS TITLE CORRECTLY SPELLS WILBUR HARDEN’S NAME AS "WILBUR HARDEN", NOT AS "WILBUR MARDEN”, AS FOUND ON THE SECOND PRESSING.

·       The record has a Rudy Van Gelder’s name or  his initials (RVG) clearly stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax)

·       DEEP GROOVE PRESSING

·       THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·       CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

·       THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING

·       MONO version of this album has NEVER been available on legitimate Compact Disc or in any other digital format.

(PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVER, LABEL OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

(Note: this is a REAL image of the ACTUAL item you are bidding on. This is NOT a "recycled" image from our previous auction. What you see is what you'll get.  GUARANTEED!)

The presence of John Coltrane on this 1958 Savoy release is its obvious drawing card, but in fact there are impressive contributions from all hands. Leader Wilbur Harden had left the jazz scene by the early '60s, which is a pity. He was a player with fresh ideas and an engaging command of his trumpet's and flügelhorn's middle register. The sextet heard on this CD performs two Harden compositions and one by the group's trombonist, Curtis Fuller, for a skimpy total running time of 29 minutes. The "way out" reference in the title is misleading. There are traces of "exotic" Asian and African influences, but they never overpower what is essentially an intelligent, straight-ahead, hard bop date.

At the time of this release, Coltrane had been recording as a leader and sideman for Prestige and was on his second tour of duty with Miles Davis, whose group was on the verge of recording Kind of Blue. Coltrane was also about to begin recording for Atlantic. Interestingly, Jazz Way Out's pianist, Tommy Flanagan, and drummer, Art Taylor, were to join Coltrane on the classic take of "Giant Steps" and most of the other tracks on the tenor player's Atlantic debut. With Harden's group, Coltrane, as he did with Davis and on his own Atlantic recordings, systematically (and with sublime composure) turns the chord changes inside out, upside down, and sideways, creating a new vocabulary, syntax, and structure for jazz. Coltrane completists will definitely want these tracks in their collections, but the less fanatical listener will also have no difficulty in appreciating the collective performances of the entire sextet.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split; All three seams were delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has a tape residue (yellowish discoloration from the removed piece of old and aged scotch tape)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the upper seam

-         Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a microscopic price code and a 1961 date written in one corner)

-         Tiny, barely visible, water stain noted in one corner.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
