NEWSAGENT'S DESCRIPTION
This listing is for an original 1976 U.S. stereo pressing of Step By Step, the debut album as a leader by New York jazz trombonist John Gordon, released by the legendary artist-controlled Strata-East label (SES-19760). Recorded in 1975, the album places Gordon at the center of the post-bop and spiritual jazz movement associated with Strata-East, blending modal passages, free-form exploration, and hard-driving ensemble interplay.
This original LP features a sextet with Strata-East co-founders Charles Tolliver on trumpet and Stanley Cowell on piano and electric piano, alongside saxophonist Roland Alexander, bassist Lisle Atkinson, and avant-garde drumming master Andrew Cyrille. The three-horn frontline gives Step By Step its powerful, expansive sound, making the album a compelling find for collectors of spiritual jazz, modal jazz, and the deeper Strata-East catalog.
Housed in its original cardboard jacket, this record has been play tested and ultrasonically cleaned.
