Description
Artist: John Lee Hooker.
Record label: Modern Records, Hollywood, California, # 20-627, recorded in Detroit, Michigan on November 3, 1948.
Song titles: A side: SALLY MAE, matrix # 7003; B side: BOOGIE CHILLEN', matrix # 7006.
Grade: Labels: E+, with vivid red colors and pristine silver logos and lettering; shellac: E-, with expected rub marks and superficial scratches for a record that has been played numerous times, and was recorded 62 years ago; sound: E, with expected surface noise, but what a genuine listening experience...just John Lee Hooker, and his guitar! John Lee Hooker's voice and guitar are crystal clear on both tunes, and you virtually forget about any surface noise as soon as he begins to play and sing.
Comments: Serious collectors know the John Lee Hooker story better than I, so I'll simply share a bit of history on this particular 78 rpm record. This highly collectible record was the first of twenty eight 78 RPM singles that John Lee Hooker would record on the legendary Modern Records label, and it produced his first hit titled BOOGIE CHILLEN'...most collectors consider this song to be the most highly prized recording of his legendary career. It is also important to note that this 78 RPM record was the first record ever recorded by John Lee Hooker, and is by far the rarest of all of his singles. Rest assured that I will pack this 78 with a lot of care between two pieces of cardboard, wrapped very well with bubble wrap, and shipped in a new thick cardboard box, as I understand the importance of making certain that the record arrives to its new home in the condition that I described in this listing. Good luck, and thanks for your interest.
