JOHN LEE HOOKER/SERVES YOU RIGHT TO SUFFER *IMPORT*  - 180 GRAM -

John Lee Hooker himself did not know his exact date of birth. If he hadn't died at around the age of 80, this ageless musician would still be easily pulling the next generation to his gigs. Hooker remains a phenomenon, a mysterious figure of black rhythm and blues, a charismatic king who reigns supreme in rock 'n' roll's Hall of Fame. John W. Peters described his music as a synthesis of scorching emotional ardour, unrelenting rhythmic intensity, and original poetry of a highly personal character. Anyone hearing him for the first time may well be startled at the unfiltered passion and power of his music.

And another surprise is in store for those who compare Hooker's late recordings with those made in the Sixties. His unmistakable, raw voice has fully matured, but his incantory style of singing appears markedly finer and more flexible. And then there is the perfect gem of a rhythm group whose sinewy sounds fill the grooves with merciless gravitational force. It's enough to make your spine tingle!

BONUS AUDIOPHILE TREMENDOUSLY RARE 180 GRAM LP CONTAINS THESE SELECTIONS - O' BLUES WHERE ART THOU?

In the years folowing world war II, the major record companies went back into full production. Styles & tastes were changing, & these companies were rushing out product to meet the demands of "Middle America". Unfornately, these companies often neglected the tastes of other Americans, especially blacks & rural whites. this void helped open the door for a number of independent labels.

In 1947, a young New York jazz enthusiat, named Bob Shad, left his job as A&R man for the National and form Castle Record Company. Within a year, this company would be issuing records on its "Sittin' In With" Label.

These 1st releases were skillfully produced, & featured the music that he knew best, jazz. Fortunately for the blues world, Shad had become close friends with Joe Bilhari, of Modern Records, a leading blues and R&B label. Joe Bihari was one of the foremost blues producers in the world, and together they traveled through the south, where Modern was selling thousands of records. This was a learning experience for Shad, and he returned to New York and prepared to record some of the local blues artists, including Brownie Mcghee and Wilbert "Big Chief" Ellis.

These first efforts were done with the same perfection as the jazz releases. Joe Bihari suggested a trip to the south, where he could record local talent in Southern recording studios or radio stations. Shad decides to make the trip, but rather than go into studios, which were often poorly equipped or very expensive, he purchased a portable Magnecord tape recorder for recordingin the field. By early 1950, the company was turning out hits by southern artists that are apart of this collection. Fortunately, the tapes were preserved and are now being presented to a new generation of blues enthusiasts.
