Description

Johnny Williams (John Lee Hooker) – Questionnaire Blues / Real Gone Gal
Gotham Records G-509
10” 78 RPM Shellac
1951

Scarce early John Lee Hooker recording issued under the pseudonym Johnny Williams on Gotham Records. Features “Questionnaire Blues” backed with “Real Gone Gal.”

This is an original 1951 Gotham issue with BL-1 / BL-2 markings in the deadwax. A great piece of early John Lee Hooker and postwar Detroit blues history.

Condition: Visually graded only / NOT play tested.

Record retains nice overall gloss but shows surface wear consistent with age and use, including light scuffs, hairlines and scratches, along with several more noticeable marks. There are a few small pits/divots visible in the playing surface and a curved/spiral-type mark on Side 2. It is unclear whether these are manufacturing-related or from previous use. Because this record has not been play tested, any effect on playback is unknown.

No cracks or major edge chips observed.

Labels show age-related wear, including some edge wear/roughness and creasing as pictured.

Includes the vintage Record Mart – Nashville, Tennessee paper sleeve shown in the photos. The plastic sleeve has “John Lee Hooker” handwritten on it by a previous owner, correctly identifying Johnny Williams as Hooker.

Please review all photos carefully for the most accurate representation of condition. The record was photographed under bright, reflective lighting specifically to make surface marks easier to see. Please reach out with questions before purchase.

Photos are part of the description.

Due to the age, rarity and fragile nature of this shellac 78, it will be packed carefully and securely for shipment.
