Whereas much of the early John Lee Hooker material makes you think of a destitute, toothless man sitting in a hot, damp basement with only a banged up guitar for company – which is probably exactly what he was - The Healer is a much more polished effort. I like some of the old stuff, but it does tend to get monotonous after a while. Here, he collaborates with some of the finest blues musicians around at the time, and it really brings out the best in the old master. Thus the first seven tracks – particularly “Baby Lee” (with Robert Cray) and “Rocking Chair” (with Charlie Musselwhite) – are the best, while the three solo songs at the end are merely run-of-the-mill.

Original LP version of “The Healer” was issued in the late 80’s,  when the LP format was officially pronounced dead , and in 1989 production of virtually all vinyl LPs “mysteriously” ceased, as if on cue (hint, hint: major record labels had something to do with it). As a result, vinyl LP versions of this late Hooker  masterpiece are surprisingly hard to find today.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams  (nothing significant)

-       Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)
