Label Condition: All four are immaculate: ultra clean, fresh and attractive. Any spindle traces minuscule, one trace on a couple, two appear unmarked.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 127 / 135 grams. Good weights for this difficult time for record manufacturers due to the oil shortage.

Rarity: Moderately scarce: and both records here appear hardly played. All elements of this set are present including the elusive and often lost small card showing the Statue of Liberty. Also the parts in lovely condition, just a small neat bottom edge split on the black inner I carefully and very neatly repaired to stop it widening in the future. These inners are quite difficult to find unsplit, often from day one due to movement in transit to retailers.

Brief Artist & Album Info: My favourite post-Beatles Lennon work – but I am sure I am very much in the minority as this album was not well-received when first issued. This 1972 double set was the follow-up to the massive selling Imagine and was far less commercial, especially the second disc. It contained a number of political songs, and was written during the peak of Lennon’s involvement with hippie-radical, Jerry Rubin. Lennon addresses numerous problems with angry lyrics over deceptively melodic songs. The easy going and seemingly innocent ‘Luck of the Irish’ is one example of melody with scathing comment. The album’s strongest track is yet another song with one of Lennon’s statement-like titles: ‘Woman is the…’. Once again he was ahead of the game, making a bold plea for women’s rights a decade before it became fashionable. The second record (with it’s cast of 1000s listed above) includes a session live with Elephant’s Memory and Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention recorded Live at the Fillmore East when Lennon joined Zappa and his band for an encore. There has always been disagreement and controversy over the mixing and credits for the Zappa and Lennon tracks on this album. The songs and mixing on this album and the versions on Zappa’s Playground Psychotics double set vary considerably. The most contentious are for the credits to ‘Jamrag’. This track is actually ‘King Kong’, one of Frank’s most famous instrumentals that was included on his 1968 album ‘Uncle Meat’. Here mysteriously retitled ‘Jamrag’ and credited to Lennon and Ono. This copy includes both inners: the first a black one with all the albums credits, the second is a variation (or modification) of the Zappa/Mothers album Fillmore East, June 1971. It’s the same cover but has been heavily overprinted with red ink. Of course this album is essential for Zappa collectors as side four features the great man and his band live on stage with The Plastic Ono Band for a full-on jam for the finale. As stated, the second disc is very uncommercial with Ono’s vocal extremes that many find hard to take. This is a very fine copy overall, both the records look hardly even played and offer super sound, the cover equally hardly aged and both inners very clean and attractive (with just the minor repair made by myself). The inclusion of the small card of the Statue of Liberty is a real bonus, most copies are missing this piece, often lost or even discarded, it is now quite hard to locate – and this one is guaranteed original. A couple of interesting details stated on the back cover: “This album was completed on March 20, 1972, our third wedding anniversary.” and ‘An additional 12 inch long player is included inside this album’ which clearly indicates sides one and two were regarded as the album proper, with sides three and four being a ‘bonus’ item. Also there is Zappa’s customary catch-phrase on the front “Register to Vote”. This double set is a real gem, very powerful lyrically, the main album mostly melodic and even catchy. But for those expecting another commercially safe ‘Imagine’ were in for a shock, clearly the reviewers of the time were baffled.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. Including the two inners and the quite rare card as mentioned above. Printed and made in England.

Cover Front & Back: Both in exceptional clean condition, this one seldom wears well. Looking like a newspaper, this is more often seen grubby and badly discoloured. One that has hardly aged and and still clean with minimal traces of any set-off, darkening or grubbiness. Barely a crease to be seen and no rubbing, the lack of ringwear also a huge plus, double sets are very hard to find without it. Indeed, this cover could prove a solid upgrade for many, and this will not prove easy to find much better.

Cover Gatefold Inner: This is little short of as-made, the overall cover’s lack of browning and nicotine staining is great news for collectors.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both pairs straight, clean, barely worn, flush and parallel – who needs more?

Right Edge(s), and Type: All mostly sharp and crisp with just the odd burr trace seen viewed end-on. Records enter on these vulnerable edges, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, all edges meeting up very closely and parallel, all text is perfect and unworn and there is plenty of it. The lack of grubbiness or browning on this – in most cases, exposed edge – is a major plus again. Many seen are badly rubbed and very darkened or grubby, this almost exceptional in that respect.

Corners: ALL corners are in SUPERB condition, that for gatefold covers is unusual as they tend to catch racks and storage pieces far easier. None have any dinks or rubbing, hence all are crisp and crease-free with near mint shape retained.

Cover Summary: Given the challenging nature of cover, this is a really lovely example, certainly one of the very best I have seen – only my own copy has a very small edge, but that stays here for the foreseeable future as I collect all things that are Zappa related. With many badly ringworn and badly discoloured, this has little to fault at all and gives scant clues to it’s impressive age. One to please most collectors.

Inner Sleeve 1 (The Black One): EXCELLENT: and this actually looks Near Mint. I have to move down one rung of the grading ladder due to the small, very neat repair to the bottom edge split, that hardly even shows. Records will move and cut edges as all collectors will know, many such unlined paper inners fell victim to movement in transit, so even from new, some were split. This neat and minor repair (made by me) is the only blemish of note on this difficult black inner. If deemed viable, I will repair inner edges to stop them potentially widening in the future, this I do to a high standard (if I say so myself). This highly revealing dark inner has barely any handling (fingermark) traces, no creasing and all other edges are sound and solid. Even the deeply recessed top is immaculate and totally undamaged, crisp and neat. Even with the minor repair (that hardly even shows), this fragile inner will take some beating.

Inner Sleeve 2 (The ‘Fillmore’ One): EXCELLENT(++): this replicates Zappa’s ‘Fillmore East’ album but was heavily modified for this set with Lennon’s edits and scribbling – surely Zappa must have given his approval for this? The credit for ‘Jamrag’ is clearly an error however as this track is Zappa’s ‘King Kong’ with a different title. Apart from a small crease near the top left, this has little else to fault. Very clean, fresh and attractive and with no edge splits, rubs or repairs. The lack of grubbiness or ageing, seldom seen. This again has the matching wide recessed top opening that is undamaged, thickened or burred. To find a pair of these looking this impressive is very difficult.

The Card Insert: EXCELLENT(++): a small card (127 x 88 mm [3.5 x 5 inches]) and, apart from top conditions, the rarest part of this set. Both sides are fresh and clean with barely any traces of ageing and totally uncreased. This has a matt surface, only under angled light are a few light surface marks seen, but totally invisible seen in normal daylight room conditions. The edges crisp and sharp, any hint of grubbiness minuscule, like the rest of the set, it gives few clues to age and will never prove easy to find better. This card being elusive enough to show as my main picture for this listing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A lovely set with just ultra light and whispy fine surface traces seen under my intense desk lamp I use for critical grading. The type of traces unseen with normal room light viewing, and records stored within unlined inners rarely can escape as a barest minimum. All four sides very clean with lovely shine and solidly pressed. I am certain both discs have hardly been played and have NO stylus or penetrating marks at all. A quality pressing with no unseen manufacturing nasties or tracking issues, this pair impress. Visually a lovely – and possibly undergraded pair that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super pair play even above their high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Any surface sound minimal, gentle and faint, hardly anything at all, overall, a quality Apple pressing. Both channels are clean and clear, I feel very sure these records have been very lightly played, if indeed hardly at all. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this set - it’s power and intensity is heard to maximum advantage. An all-round copy that will prove difficult to find significantly better, and one that merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
