Description
CONDITION
Sleeve: VERY GOOD with minimal wear. Corners and edges are sharp, no split seams. Front cover has a very small color chip/scuff an inch from bottom edge in Lennon's hair (see image). Record: Vinyl record visually graded as NEAR MINT. Label VERY GOOD - has tiny color chip near center hole of A-side; right edge of B-side label has small missing piece (see images).
In January 1975, Roots: John Lennon Sings The Great Rock & Roll Hits was offered by mail-order distributor Adam VIII. The record was available for three days before Apple/Capitol/EMI initiated legal action to stop.the sales. 3000 albums were pressed and approximately 1270 sold. The remaining albums were returned to Lennon and were destroyed, making this the among the rarest Beatle-related album. Original copies can sell for as much as $2000, if ever offered.
We are offering the vinyl REPRODUCTION, which was produced in the early 80's. This vinyl reproduction has become fairly scarce itself due to the advent of CDs. Differences between the original and the reproduction are noted below:
1) Reproduction cover is on heavy cardboard, like standard LPs from the 60's and 70's. The original cover was a much thinner sleeve, similar to European pressings.
2) The spine copy on the reproduction reads "JOHN LENNON SINGS THE GREATEST ROCK & ROLL HITS". On the original, the word "GREAT" is used, not "GREATEST".
3) On the back cover of the reproduction, the images of other Adam XIII albums available are somewhat blurry while the original has crisp, sharp images.
4) The inner sleeve of the reproduction is a generic white sleeve while the original had a printed inner sleeve.
In February 1975, Apple rush-released the "official" version of the album, "Rock & Roll". Among fans and collectors, however, there is no question as to which version of the album is superior. Not only does Roots feature substantially different, and much rawer, mixes of the Rock 'n' Roll material, it also includes two songs omitted from the Capitol set -- a tremendous version of "Be My Baby" and a shimmering "Angel Baby."
