Over a period of several years I am slowly listing a remarkable record collection for auction on ebay. This collection belonged to my friend Brian, one of the most discerning record collectors I have ever known. Brian started buying records in 1966 when he was a teenager. His infatuation for vinyl developed into a career and he eventually ended up working for RCA records and CBS/Sony records as a disc mastering engineer from 1977 to 1989. Brian’s not with us anymore, and I’m making good on my promise to him to sell his records in lovingly-prepared auctions which reflect the love he had for his vast collection. The proceeds go to his family.

Brian’s collection is the kind that rarely comes up for sale. He had great taste in music and collected vinyl seriously for 40 years, taking superb care of his collection. To see all of Brian’s records that I currently have listed, click here.

Condition of sleeve: VG+. Front cover has a couple of small laminate creases on the spine edge and a some minor blemishes around the white border. The back cover also has just minor blemishes. One tiny red ink spot on the sleeve notes.

Condition of record: NM-. Beautiful pressing, minimal surface noise, no distortion. Perfect audio.

Further Notes:

Crusade is the fourth John Mayall album and features the first recordings of then-unknown 18-year-old guitarist Mick Taylor, later to join the Stones.Taylor's performance is indeed the highlight, just as Eric Clapton and Peter Green's playing was on the previous album. The centerpiece of the album is a beautiful instrumental by Taylor titled "Snowy Wood," which, while wholly original, seems to combine both Green and Clapton's influence with great style and sensibility. Peter Green had left the band to form Fleetwood Mac, and this would be John McVie's last album with Mayall. This LP features a ripping rendition of Willie Dixon's "I Can't Quit You Baby" that pre-dates Led Zeppelin's by more than a year.

You will see many new faces here now. Alongside John McVie and myself you will see Mick Taylor on guitar, Keef Hartley on drums, Chris Mercer on tenor sax and Rip Kant on baritone sax. These are the new Bluesbreakers and I hope you will appreciate their work as much as I appreciate them all as people. I will not speak here of their individual talent but will let you hear this record and leave their appraisal to you. A word or two about the choice of material. I have chosen to campaign for some of my blues heroes by recording one number each from their own recorded repertoires and, amongst the original compositions, I include a tribute to J.B. Lenoir whose untimely death came as a great shock to me. I was even more saddened by the fact that his death only rated a couple of brief paragraphs in one British musical paper and it seems that his short life was one of great work without reward. It is about time that the blues fraternity made an outcry against a system locked in the belief that blues fans are only a small minority in the world of popular music. Hence the title of this new Bluesbreakers LP - CRUSADE. I have dedicated my life to the blues…I hope you'll join forces with me.
