Label/Format: Decca – original unboxed stereo format with very deep colour with matt, smooth surfaces. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in superb conditions: ultra clean, fresh with strong colour. Spindle marks are only very few, fine and light as seen more critically under bright angled light. This early stereo beauty appears hardly played and sounds fantastic.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Eleven songs that track Mayall’s musical progression over the previous five years and including the host of blues stars and musicians listed above. Looking Back is a collection of his Decca singles, most are scarce and the tracks are in lovely stereo - this album was briefly available in both modes. This is a superb collection for the blues fan by arguably the greatest artist of the genre ever. A wonderful opportunity to own this scarce unboxed early stereo original in lovely clean condition, this was a joy from beginning to end and has the very rare ‘B ‘ stampers, the very first in the sequence.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a gatefold format with the front and back laminated with Clarifoil, the front being only single thickness card making the perils of creasing and laminate issues all the more obvious. This was printed and made in England by Clout & Baker and has the mono/stereo peep-hole on the back. In this case, the blue inner sleeve fills this hole and denotes this is a stereo copy.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a very fine more semi-gloss finish which on this cover was correct. It has very little creasing, lifting or bowing of note, Clarifoil tends to contract over time and these are all common. A little burring to the edges is difficult to avoid totally. The mono/stereo hole on the back is crisp and very neat with no laminate shift. Overall, both sides are attractive and little detracts from the splendid artwork.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside again has little to fault, minor edge burring, little else.

Top Edges: A little thickening and gentle burring, but still quite neat overall.

Bottom Edges: Moderate rubbing, a little thickening and burring. Thin storage edges will seldom avoid some wear of this type.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with minimal traces of wear, and any thickening light. No feathering either, these thin card edges often soften and separate which has been avoided here. Both edges are guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, but made quite thin, straight with minimal traces of compression, very slight tilt to right being ultra critical. Folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. This all adds to the neatness and visual pleasure to a gatefold cover. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. The surface remains ultra smooth to the fingertip with no even a single scuff or crack at all. A tiny tone spot on the bottom corner tip, but they seldom get seen much better overall.

Corners: Most of any corner wear is light, just the odd moderate one (bottom right back). Very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: An attractive all-round example of this somewhat fragile late 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find better. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this a blue example to denote a stereo copy through the peep-hole at the back of the main cover. Polylined and aged little with hardly any creases and no splits or tears (or repairs). The window circles practically as made and undamaged with a very clear lining with minimal crinkle. None of the usual glue browning on the seams which all remain unsplit and any rub traces very small and slight. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text. Such clean inners always are great indicators that the record has been removed or handled little.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably, undergraded as such, this is a beautiful vintage Decca record. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed on top quality Decca vinyl. These late unboxed originals I consider very special and only sold in modest numbers, this one being quite late as the label changed in 1969 to the more familiar boxed format. This has been played very little with any surface marks very fine and faint, hardly any on side two at all, which I could easily grade Mint(–). This record was not even that easy to remove from it’s polylined inner and I would be sure it had not seen light-of-day for decades, but has suffered NO inner bag ‘rash’. Visually impressive and it should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent quality Decca record plays even beyond it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The song ‘They Call it Stormy Monday’ is one exception: this is a live track with less than studio quality sound, it’s raw audio quality often means this can sound quite rough, but here it plays just as it should. I have on occasion heard this song break up and even distort on lesser copies. The quality sound will seldom be heard better with most being affected by vintage record players that were never groove-friendly – we have all seen and heard such copies. Any surface sounds barely even register and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, but as you would expect from Decca – the label I respect above all others for pressing standards. Few available ones will match or outperform this original very early pressed stereo copy I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. This gave an outstanding performance via my LP12 which takes no prisoners in revealing all the good (as well as the bad) on any record. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful John Mayall album, up there with his very best for me. This copy will prove very difficult to match, let alone find better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
