John Polce -- The Call LP
Original 1976 US stereo private pressing on Brotherly Love Productions (Newport RI) (catalog # 6064N4).Here's an outstanding and obscure private Xian LP of solo acoustic-guitar folk from John Polce, of Rhode Island. Very introspective, plaintive, and delicate songs meditating on hearing the call from Jesus. These songs are very strong and evocative in a moody, downer/loner-folk vein, and Polce's hypnotic guitar playing supports the mood very well, providing an at times almost drone-like modal blues-raga feel.
Acid Archives: "JOHN POLCE: The Call (Brotherly Love, US 1976) For those who thought the wells had run dry of either great unknown downer folk, or great Christian '70s albums, here's an outstanding Christian downer folk LP that seems to be almost unknown. Polce opens his album with a so-so upbeat tune, but then lays on dark, Catholic moods that become increasingly spellbinding with each number. The last track on side 1 has a Dave Bixby-like intensity, but the rest is more reminiscent of Bob Desper -- with strong, soaring vocals, sombre guitar-picking, and well-written minor chord tunes. Side 2 is a hypnotic journey into late-night Calvary guilt that will arrest your attention for the full 20 minutes it lasts. Housed in a beautiful color sleeve, "The Call" is one of the Top 5 best albums I've run across in 2009.
