John Renbourn's famous phrase was that "I started out trying to play like Big Bill Broonzy, and I'm still trying." On this early outing, the first to appear under his own name, you can, perhaps, detect some of the influence on traditional blues like "John Henry" and "Candy Man." But as a player, Renbourn had already very much developed into his own man, imaginative and complete in technique -- listen to the bonus instrumental take of "Wildest Pig in Captivity" to hear his very assured brilliance. Also in evidence is his love of early music, such as "Song," whose lyrics come from a John Donne poem, or his own "Plainsong." He'd already met up with fellow guitar player Bert Jansch, with whom he'd record and form Pentangle, and together they wrote "Noah and Rabbit." While hardly the greatest singer, there's an appealingly earnest quality to his voice, although he sounds a little strained on a cover of the folk classic "Blues Run the Game" (another bonus cut on the reissue). As debuts go, you'd be hard pressed to find anything much better in the folk cauldron that was London in the mid-'60s. The genesis of a master.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original “Made in England” stock inner sleeve

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Back cover has a small sticker /label, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers

-         Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel (nothing significant)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2    (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
