Another from my personal collection! Purchased from new in the early 70s! I don't recall ever playing this vinyl, the vinyl certainly looks unplayed! This album is virtually impossible to find in this near mint archive condition like this one on offer! This features the Transatlantic labels! This would be the 2nd label variation for this pressing,, without any spidering or even visable signs of ever been played in my opinion!! The original laminated front 1st issue Robert Stace cover is also very near mint in my opinion just a hint of ringware rubbing not really notice unless looked for! Try to find a better copy than this one after 40 years! Very rare to find!

John Renbourn (born 8 August 1944, Marylebone, London, England) is an English guitarist and songwriter. He is possibly best known for his collaboration with guitarist Bert Jansch as well as his work with the folk group Pentangle, although he maintained a solo career before, during and after that band's existence (1967–1973).

While most commonly labelled a folk musician, Renbourn's musical tastes and interests take in early music, classical music, blues and world music. His most influential album, Sir John Alot (1968), featured his take on songs from the Medieval era!.

John Renbourn studied classical guitar at school and it was during this period that he was introduced to Early Music. In the 1950s, along with many others, he was greatly influenced by the musical craze of "Skiffle" and this eventually led him to explore the work of artists such as Lead Belly, Josh White and Big Bill Broonzy!.

In the 1960s the new craze in popular music was Rhythm and Blues, also the impact of Davey Graham was being felt. In 1961 Renbourn toured the South West with Mac MacLeod and repeated the tour in 1963.On returning from the South West Renbourn and MacLeod recorded a demo tape together. Renbourn briefly played in an R&B band while studying at the Kingston College of Art in London. Although the British "Folk Revival" was underway, most folk clubs were biased towards traditional, unaccompanied folk songs, and guitar players were not always welcome. However, the Roundhouse in London had a more tolerant attitude and here, John Renbourn joined blues and gospel singer Dorris Henderson, playing backing guitar and recording two albums with her!.

Possibly the best known London venue for contemporary folk music in the early 1960s was "Les Cousins" on Greek Street, Soho, which became the main meeting place for guitar players and contemporary singer-songwriters from Britain and America. Around 1963, Renbourn teamed up with guitarist Bert Jansch who had moved to London from Edinburgh, and together they developed an intricate duet style that became known as "folk baroque". Their album Bert and John is a fine example of their playing!.

Renbourn released several albums on the TransatlantIc label during the 1960s. Two of them, Sir John Alot and Lady And The Unicorn sum up Renbourn's playing style and material from this period. Sir John Alot has a mixture of jazz/blues/folk playing alongside a more classical/early music style. Lady And The Unicorn is heavily influenced by Renbourn's interest in early music!.

At around this time, Renbourn also started playing with Jacqui McShee who sang traditional English folk songs. Together with Bert Jansch, bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox, they went on to form Pentangle. The group became very successful, touring America in 1968, playing at Carnegie Hall and the Newport Folk Festival!.

Renbourn went on to record more solo albums in the 1970s and 1980s. Much of the music is based on traditional material with a Celtic influence, interwoven with other styles. He also collaborated with American guitarist Stefan Grossman in the late 1970s, recording two albums with him, which at times recall his folk baroque days with Bert Jansch!.

In the mid-1980s Renbourn went back to the university to earn a degree in composition. Since then, he has focused mainly on writing classical music, while still performing in folk settings. He also added acoustic guitars for the movie soundtrack Scream for Help, a studio project with his neighbour John Paul Jones!.

In 1988, Renbourn briefly formed a group called Ship of Fools with Tony Roberts (flute), Maggie Boyle (lyrics, misc. instruments) and Steve Tilston (guitar). They recorded one eponymous album together. After practising by mailing tapes to each other in England, they held their first concert, comprising two sold-out shows, at Harvard's Hasty Pudding Club Theater. Regrettably, the soundboard bootleg tape was not saved due to a dispute between the concert promoter and the audio engineer!!.

The Vinyl

This vinyl gleems as a new vinyl! This is the original thicker heavier vinyl (only early press) Lays perfectly flat on the turntable! Please note! This vinyl looks like it has never been played before, I certainly don't recall ever playing this vinyl from when i purchased this in the early seventies! Any marks that could possibly be seen would be sleeve removal scuffs only, importantly no marks that would cause any clicks or pops!

The Audio Quality

I have very carfully played this vinyl one time track for track prior to listing at very loud volume on a top system. The audio can not be surpassed on these early UK pressings in my opinion truly stunning throughout!,

The audio is cristal clear and vibrant all of the way through! Importantly there is no loud clicks or pops heard during the audio, no distortion and certainly no skips or jumps. Any light static/crackle heard during quiet places would probably be due to the fact that this vinyl has been in storage laying dormant for the past 40 years or more and a constant clean before each play is highly recomended and would enhance the audio quality!  I would class myself as highly critical , please look at my completed listings of records that I have sold of this calaber and you will see that I normaly get it right! The audio quality on was near perfect\near mint on my systems (One of the best copies that I have seen or heard) Very rare to find after 40 years!

Please note! I always add this disclaimer! That I have given my honest opinion when describing the audio quality of this vinyl. and have played it through track for track. !, Please allow for the odd isolated static (not) consistant through out the audio!!! Remember this is an original (not) a reissue that is 44 years old and would have been played on a system that is 40 years old!! (One of the best that I have heard Audio graded as very near perfect \ near mint on my systems)

Please note! A constant clean before each play is highly recomended! This vinyl has been stored laying dormant for over 40 years! A buld up of dirt and dust in the grooves causes static/ crackle. A clean before each play will drastically reduce static and enhance the audio quality!

The audio is graded at the very very top near mint through out!

The Labels

These are the original Transatlantic labels (2nd variation) These are like new! No visable spider marks  No spindle ware (the hole is perfectly round) This looks like it hasn't ever been played in my opinion! 

The Cover

This is the 1st issue ,Laminated front only Robert Stace cover! This is clean and straight without any splits or tares at the edges! Please note! On initial inspection this is like a new cover! (no) nast names written! On close scrutiny I can just see minor ringware only (very light only) Clean and straight as it should be. very slight laminate lift at the front near the spine (see photos) This cover must grade at least excellent plus in my opinion!
