JOHN TAVENER – CELTIC REQUIEM - REQUIEM FOR JENNY JONES (Apple SAPCOR 20, released 1993). A reissue of the original 1971 album, housed in a gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeve, on the highly collectable Apple label.
This is a remarkable disc, especially for two groups of collectors. When this recording was originally released in 1971, John Tavener was supported by Apple Records which - in turn - had been founded by The Beatles. Since then John Tavener has gone on to a successful composing career with some of his music, such as "The Protecting Veil" selling large numbers of copies. So for both Beatles enthusiasts and lovers of John Tavener's music this disc offers considerable interest.
What of the music and how does this interest each group? The Celtic Requiem is a brave, exciting work from the 1960's Avant Garde. This is a sometimes atonal, dissonant and raucous work of the kind your mother would warn you against. Split into three movements, it combines children's choir, a soprano, church organ and modest instrumental forces to weave a profoundly disturbing sound world. It is almost as though a child is being teased - or bullied - and is slipping away from the real world into a semi-awake world of fear and hurt. This is a piece by a composer who took a musical genre and formed a musical expression of childhood lived in darkness. The other two pieces, "Nomine Jesu" and "Coplas" are more introspective. Mostly focussed on the human voice, these are quieter works of great skill and peace that have much to recommend them.
So who would want them? For Beatles enthusiasts, this is an expression of the extraordinarily broad tastes of the Fab Four at the time and a legacy of their encouragement of creativity in all forms. For those who know Tavener's work following his embrace of Orthodox Christianity in 1977, The Celtic Requiem is an intriguing view of what might have been and the remaining pieces point at the composer he was to become.
