Some insight on the tracks:::
SLUM SETTINGS FOR FIVE BASSES::
The narrated text originally appeared in the Olympia Press novel, Nether City. Here the newly edited version sets up the form from which the individual bass parts draw their inspiration. The setting is the all too hum deprived-depraved life of those trapped in the urban slums. In this Nether City, life continues in its own unique manifestations--many times virtually obscene. Nether City's people in their actions and pronouncements form the architectural patterns which create the music::each of the five basses becomes voyeur, participant, and commentator on these darker sides of life.
BINGO::
A game...places five basses literally in a suburban church bingo game, complete with caller and rich background vocalizing of the women in attendance. Thus the Middle-American setting becomes aurally surreal. Each of the players has as his part a bingo card with musical instructions . The rich sound producing qualities of the contrabass are heavily used. However, different players may have different instructions, e.g. one player may be required to battuto col lengo for his I-25, and another player pizzicato both sides of a fingered g string for his I-25. The piece is meant to be humorous as well as serious. There is no need for contemporary music to be ponderous. This piece uses the musical composition techniques of chance, as well as serialization, improvisation, as well as statistical calculations. It is also a tongue-in-cheek glance at John Cage's I CHING, Xenakis' stochastic methods, and all those post-Schoenberg academic serialists; for all of those techniques are contained in the game of bingo.
VINYL:::NM ((The occasional pop, a bit of surface noise, all in all a VERY clean copy)).
COVER::NM ((Stock/custom cover !! Virtually flawless, outside of black marker on the upper back corner and the previous owner writing his name on one of the labels)).
