These 17 songs are offered with no information, but they are, in fact, some of the cornerstone songs and recordings of Johnny Cash's long and remarkable career. Set opener "Hey, Porter!" for instance, was his first recording for Sam Phillips and Sun Records.

Many of these songs have become American classics--"I Walk the Line," "Get Rhythm," and "Folsom Prison Blues" being three instantly recognizable numbers. "Luther Played the Boogie" pays tribute to Luther Perkins, who was part of Cash's first band and instrumental in shaping his combo sound (Perkins perished in a fire less than a decade after his seminal recordings first appeared). This is another in the numerous sets which serve as helpful introductions into Cash's voluminous output--THE SUN YEARS, THE ESSENTIAL JOHNNY CASH (1955-1983), and THE VINTAGE YEARS (1955-1963) being three more.

·       THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP   (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)
